It may be due to some weird alignment of the stars, or a movement to start “Cinco de Mayo” early, but Friday May 3 there are four great art events in Saranac Lake.
With good timing, it could be possible for one to make all four events, but it’s more likely choices will have to be made.
The 2013 gallery season opens with exhibits at the Adirondack Artists Guild and NorthWind Fine Arts. I will be the featured artist for the month at the Artists Guild, 52 Main Street, and will be showing, for the first time, the paintings I’ve done while hiking in some of our greatest National Parks: Glacier, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon. Some people fill up albums with photos from their travels – I experience places by painting them. The exhibit reception will be May 3 from 5 – 7, refreshments will be served, and the work will remain up through May 28.
Peter Shrope will be exhibiting a new installation of his work at NorthWind Fine Arts, 36 Main Street. The exhibit will feature his original Adirondack Rockware pottery that he began developing over five years ago. His research and experimentation in using native Adirondack rock as an ingredient in ceramic glazes references contemporary trends in thinking about and using local materials. He re-interprets and pays homage to the “Adirondack Style” by his use of locally crushed rock used in his original glaze recipes. The reception is May 3 from 5 – 7, refreshments will be available and the exhibit will run until the end of May.
Pendragon Theatre has announced a great schedule for 2013 and is hosting their 10th Annual Wine Tasting on May 3, from 6 – 9 at the Whiteface Club & Resort Clubhouse in Lake Placid. A “Zinful Evening” will provide wines from around the world, a silent auction, tapas and music, all to help support the wonderful programs at the theatre. Call Pendragon to make a reservation. The first performance of the year is “Aladdin” on May 12 – and all mothers are free!
Last, because it will continue later than any of the other events, is a CD Release Party at Bluseed Studios, 24 Cedar Street, starting at 7:30 pm. Celebrate Adirondack singer songwriter Dan Berggren’s newest release “Tongues in Trees”. Dan as been performing fresh acoustic folk music rooted in the mountains for 38 years. Call Bluseed for reservations, 518-891-3799 or [email protected] You can also see Dan on May 2 when he hosts an “Open Minded Mic” Night at Bluseed.
It seems crazy that all this art, food, wine, and music will be bundled up into one evening. There should be a special prize for anyone who makes all of them. But this is why Saranac Lake is “the arts destination of the Adirondacks”! There are multiple exhibit openings every month, the 3rd Thursday ArtWalks will start in June, the Arts & Heritage Festival June 28 – July 7, the Adirondack Plein Air Festival August 15 – 18, Hobofest September 1, and the Artist at Work Studio Tour September 27-28-29. Check the Saranac Lake ArtWorks web site for more information and to see the full schedule of arts events and activities.
