The Annual Feeder Canal Alliance 5 mile Canoe/Kayak Race and Recreational Paddle will be held on Saturday June 7th with registration beginning at 8:30 am the day of the race and the race going off promptly at 10 am.
The event will begin at the Feeder Dam, located at the end of Richardson Street in Queensbury, only 1.2 miles from exit 18 on the I87 and finish at the Martindale Boat Basin located on Martindale Avenue in the village of Hudson Falls. The race passes through Queensbury, Glens Falls and Hudson Falls, providing paddlers with unique views of local parks, neighborhoods and the Feeder Canal itself.
Built in 1822, this historic canal brought water from the Hudson river to the summit of the Champlain canal, maintaining a water level that allowed passage for cargo. The Feeder Canal connected Glens Falls to the rest of New york State’s canal system, making shipping commerce possible.
The race will run rain or shine. Paddlers will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the start and finish areas. Paddler’s need two vehicles to return to the start after the race. All registered paddlers are entered into the paddler’s raffle.
The Feeder Canal Alliance, a volunteer organization founded in 1987, spearheads efforts to preserve this historic waterway through promoting the Canal’s history, preserving the canal’s integrity, educating the community on it’s continued importance to the canal system and uniting communities through cultural activities.
