Festival, Remembrance At Old Forge’s Memorial Weekend

OldForgefireworksMemorial Day weekend celebrations are starting on Friday, May 27, in Old Forge with yoga, gallery openings and the monthly Moose Comedy Night. There are also a plethora of specials from food coupons to lodging discounts. As fun and festive as the weekend plans are going to be, Old Forge has carefully separated their celebration to maintain the integrity of Memorial Day.

According to Town of Webb Tourism Director Mike Farmer this is the second year that the Old Forge Red, White and Blue Memorial Celebration weekend. For first year, organizers worked to get the event off the ground, never realizing how popular the weekend would be.

“We have always had two things in mind,” says Farmer. “There is a lot of activities to do here so we wanted to give people a structured and fun experience. We also wanted to honor the tradition of Memorial Day. We didn’t want to spill over or make it a big party. We have activities on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Monday is reserved for our Memorial Day parade and observance for those who have served and honor those we have lost.”

The weekend activities are also serving as opening day for quite a few area businesses. Though Friday is full of fun events, Saturday is where most of the activities are scheduled for all ages. This year Farmer has also set up an additional Visitors Center on Main St/Rt. 28, near Souvenir Village.

“Saturday is part of the Great Adirondack Garage Sale,” says Farmer. “We have also made the Family Festival at the George Hiltebrandt Recreation Center on North Street bigger and better. There are more bounce houses, dog parade, a magician, farmers’ market and more.”

On Sunday, the NYCOA will once again host the Kids’ Fishing Derby. Farmer expects between 40-50 participants to take place in the free event. Loaner equipment is available or people can bring their own pole. Prizes will be awarded for all participants under 18 years of age.

Farmer says, “Sunday evening we will have our first concert of the season. We host one every Sunday at the park. The Gwen Tracy Band will kick off the season and then followed by fireworks.”
