Raquette Lake will be celebrating the Birth of Great Camps as inspired by William West Durant, Friday through Sunday, August 5th – 7th 2016.
On Friday, August 5th there will be a special cruise with Raquette Lake Navigation on the W.W. Durant. Stops along the way include Camp Pine Knot, the first Great Camp and home to Collis P. Huntington of Southern Pacific Railroad Fame. Camp Pine Knot is not usually open to the public, so this is unique opportunity to see it up close. There will also be a visit to St. Williams on Long Point, a church built by W.W. Durant in 1890. St. Williams is on the National Register of Historic Sites. On Saturday, August 6th, Wide Variety, Jersey’s Premier A Cappella Group, will be performing a free concert at the Raquette Lake School. Doors open at 1:30 pm with performance at 2 pm. This concert is co-sponsored by the Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department and the Central Adirondacks Association.
The Raquette Lake Boat Parade takes place on Saturday, August 6th at 7 pm with the best view from the Raquette Lake Town Dock. The 2016 theme is “Strictly ADK.” Boats pick up registration forms at Burke’s or Birds Marina or call Pat Deyle (315) 354-4070. Cash prizes will be awarded for non-motorized, pontoon, under 14 feet and over 14 feet. At dusk there will be a fireworks showcase from the lake.
On Sunday, August 7th there will be half-priced guided tours of Great Camp Sagamore, the Alfred Vanderbilt estate, featuring 27 National Historic Landmark Buildings at 10 am. At 2 pm there is a water taxi service to and from St. Hubert’s Isle from the village dock for The Annual Ecumenical Vespers service will be held at the Church of the Good Sheppard at 3 pm.
