We are in the process of converting a workshop into an apartment while trying to maintain the 1800s farmhouse feel of the rest of the house and property. Searching for the right items has converted my Facebook feed into a salvage warehouse catalog. Though it’s easy to get items delivered right to my door, it’s fun to spend time searching for those special treasures.
For the 37th year Warrensburg is hosting the “World’s Largest Garage Sale” and if years past are any indication, we’ll be able to outfit the apartment with plenty of treasures including that spiral staircase and a cast iron sink.
According to Warrensburg Chamber Administrator Suzanne Tyler, so far over 500 vendors have signed up to participate in the October 1-2 event.
“There is no official vendor map,” says Tyler. “It is too difficult to keep up to date as the Chamber manages the outside vendors and there are residential vendors as well. We just keep adding to it each year.”
Vendor tents start at the edge of town and continue along Route 9, crossing the Schroon River. The event is very well organized and the streets are monitored making it easy to cross the Main Street (Route 9). Tyler says parking is available at the Warren County Fairgrounds for cars and RVs with overflow parking planned for the High School. As in years past, there is free transportation that leaves the fairgrounds every 15 minutes all weekend.
“We provide a free shuttle to make it easier for people. There is some street parking on the secondary streets and at the local elementary school, but it is available on a first come-first served basis,” says Tyler. “It is very clearly marked where parking is restricted. I encourage people to use the shuttle. It is worry free and takes you right back to your car.”
Tyler realizes that there will be “early birds” and she says that fine, too. After 37 years, the vendors know some people get up early to search for treasures while others are going to wait to see what is left over at the end of the day. It is all individual. Warrensburg World’s Largest Garage Sale boasts of two days of “garage sales, craft sales, antique sales, flea markets and a bargain hunters dream.” Enjoy!
