Friends of Mount Arab are set to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Mount Arab fire tower on Saturday, August 11th from 9 am to 2 pm.
Friends of Mount Arab board members will be at the trailhead. Steward and board member Tom Cullen will be at the summit observer’s cabin. It is a short jaunt to the summit, 1 mile each way, and the ascent is very family-friendly. The Adirondack Mountain Club recently organized a Trail Steward Workshop on Mount Arab, and all the waterbars are greatly improved.
The Mount Arab fire tower is the only fire tower still standing in St. Lawrence County. Mount Arab is one of three summits that comprise the Tupper Triad; the other two are Coney Mountain and Goodman Mountain. Memorabilia will be available at the trailhead.
The Mount Arab fire tower is located off Mount Arab Road in Piercefield. From the intersection of Route 3 and Route 30 in the village of Tupper Lake, follow Route 3 toward Piercefield. In about 7.25 miles, turn left on Conifer Road and follow it for almost 2 miles to Mount Arab Road, on the left. Follow that road for about 1 mile. The trailhead is on the left; parking is on the right.
