Newcomb’s TR Weekend Set For Sept 14-15th

Newcomb is set to celebrate Theodore Roosevelt’s journey out of the Adirondack High Peaks to the White House to become the 26th President, following William McKinley’s assassination. TR Weekend will be celebrated September 14-15, 2018.

This year’s event coincides with the 125th anniversary of the completion of Camp Santanoni. The camp was built in 1892 for Robert C. Pruyn, a banker and industrialist from Albany.  When Camp Santanoni was being constructed on the shores of Newcomb Lake, the property included 13,000 acres. The compound eventually included a gate house, a farm and dairy complex, and the main camp.

Pruyn descendants sold the camp property in 1953 to the Melvin family of Syracuse, who sold the property in 1972 to the ADK Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, before it was acquired by the State of New York. The property is currently managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation, Adirondack Architectural Heritage and the Town of Newcomb.

Events are planned over the entire weekend throughout Newcomb, with cultural and informative entertainment for all ages. Free wagon rides into Camp Santanoni will be available by reservation (visitors can also walk or bike to the camp). Tours guides will be station at Santanoni on both Saturday and Sunday.  More information about the history of the camp is also available at the Newcomb Historical Museum, where a new exhibit, “The Pruyns of Camp Santanoni,” features artifacts, photographs, and memories of the camp. Teddy Roosevelt visited the Pruyns and TR interpreter Joe Wiegand will be at the museum at 4 pm on Sat., Sept. 15 to talk about the visit.

SUNY ESF and Paul Smith’s College Timber Sports Teams will scrimmage at the Overlook on Route 28N on Saturday at 10:30 am, and again for a log rolling competition at the town beach on Lake Harris at 1 pm. Teddy Roosevelt reprisor Joe Wiegand will attempt to take part in the challenge with the students.

Roy Ginsberg will have a two part discussion with Joe Wiegand as TR about Roosevelt’s African and Amazon expeditions on Saturday evening from 6:30 to 8 pm.

Other events include the Ty Yandon 5K Race at 9 am; TR Weekend Golf Tournament at 10 am; a guide boat regatta on Rich Lake at 10 am; an open house at the Huntington Lodge on Arbutus Lake at 10 am; and two Tahawus Mine tours from 1 to 3 pm and 3 to 5 pm.
