The town of Lake George doesn’t just celebrate winter for a weekend or a few days, the Lake George Winter Carnival has events every weekend in February (Feb. 2-3, 9-10, 16-17, and 23-24).
The Carnival is now in its 58th year.
Each weekend is a offers a variety of unique events along the core happenings of the Carnival schedule. Family-friendly activities are available like petting zoos, games, pony rides, horse and carriage rides, a polar plunge, a hot chocolate bar, as well as a giant ice slide at Shepard’s Park. Each weekend has its highlights, such as outhouse races, a chowder cook-off, car races, kite flying, and fireworks.
This weekend kicks off the festivities with the outhouse races on Saturday, February 2, at 12:30 pm on Lake George, near Shepard’s Park. The Lake George Outhouse Race is double elimination race. If you lose twice, you;re out. There is no entry fee – just show up with an outhouse that meets the regulations. Rules can be found at Duffy’s Tavern and registration begins at 10 am the morning of the event (518) 668-5323.
The focus of Lake George’s Winter Carnival is fun. Though some of the activities do have a fee, like children’s face painting or the BBQ Cook-Off tastings. There are many events that are free. Anyone can participate in a snowman building contest or watch the numerous ice competitions. After enjoying all the snow and ice, take time to enjoy a hot drink by the bonfire overlooking a frozen Lake George.
My family has been making going to Lake George a winter tradition for years. Since it happens each weekend, we are able to check out all the other winter carnivals happening around the Adirondack without feeling like we are missing out. Please keep in mind that most activities are weather-dependent so the schedule may change. Enjoy!
