New This Season at Adirondack Experience (ADKX)

Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX), is set to open for its 62nd season on Friday, May 24, 2019. This year ADKX opens two new temporary exhibits, a new permanent installation out on Minnow Pond and a new family event.

Curious Creatures: An Adirondack Collection of Taxidermy (May 24 – Oct.14) will exhibit approximately 100 pieces of extraordinary taxidermy from private Adirondack collections and camps as well as mounts, photographs, and manuscript materials from the museum’s own collections.

Curious Creatures will explore how taxidermy represents our relationships with animals while also focusing on Adirondack taxidermists (Clarence Downs, a Blue Mountain Lake taxidermist for the turn of the century, Charles Dickert, A Saranac Lake taxidermist for the early 20th century) and their work, the law, taxidermy and Adirondack style, and new creations by contemporary artists like Barney Bellinger.

Private Views: Collecting the Adirondacks (May 24 – Oct.14) will showcase 19th century Adirondack landscape paintings from both private collections as well as the museum’s own collection. This is rare chance for the public to see 42 works by important American artists including Samuel Colman, John Lee Fitch, A.F. Tait, John Frederick Kensett, Thomas Addison Richard, George Bacon Wood, Roswell Morse Shurtleff, George Herbert McCord, William Trost Richards, and Levi Wells Prentice, among others.

On July 1, ADKX will again open up the 3⁄4 mile trail to Minnow Pond and the site of the new ADKX Boathouse.

Along the interpretive trail, visitors can experience and explore the natural world learning about historic and contemporary uses of select plant species along the trail, further understand and explore the importance of boats in the Adirondacks and highlight the connections between land and water in the Adirondacks. The rustic structure of the boathouse, designed by famed contemporary Adirondack Architect Michael Bird, will house a wide array of vintage wooden craft – some 100 years old or more – that experienced paddlers and rowers will be able to rent on pristine Minnow Pond.

Rolling ‘Round the ‘Dacks (Sat. Aug. 17) is a new family event all about transportation in the Adirondacks. Hop aboard the Roaming Railroad, discover Upstate Model Railroaders and more on this special day for the whole family.

Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake is located at 9097 St Route 30, Blue Mountain Lake. For additional information, call (518) 352-7311 or visit their website.
