Old Forge Hardware hosts ‘Filthy Beasts’ author Kirkland Hamill

Author and seasonal Adirondack resident Kirkland Hamill’s memoir “Filthy Beasts” was recently published by Simon & Schuster, and Hamill will be giving a book signing Aug. 5 at the Old Forge Hardware Store.

Hamill has written for Salon and The Advocate, and was formerly the chief development and marketing officer at the National Center for Family Philanthropy. When not in the Adirondacks, he lives in Baltimore, Md., with his husband, Dave, and a dog named Blue.

In a *starred review* from Kirkus, the memoir is called “a stunning, deeply satisfying story about how we outlive our upbringings. FILTHY BEASTS is a story not just about what makes us who we are, but what we decide to leave behind when we embark on the path of self-discovery.

The synopsis of the book, as provided by the publisher:

Following a rancorous split from New York’s upper-class society, newly divorced Wendy and her three sons are exiled from the East Coast elite circle. Wendy’s middle son, Kirkland, is eight when she moves the family to her native Bermuda, leaving the three young boys to fend for themselves as she chases after the highs of her old life: alcohol, a wealthy new suitor, and other indulgences.

After eventually leaving his mother’s dysfunctional orbit for college in New Orleans, Kirkland begins to realize how different his family and upbringing is from that of his friends and peers. Split between extreme privilege—early years living in luxury on his family’s private compound—and bare survival—rationing food and water during the height of his mother’s alcoholism—Kirkland is used to keeping up appearances and burying his inconvenient truths from the world. But it is in these years of estrangement that Kirkland breaks free from his own insecurities: his difficulties falling in love; his fear of his queer identity; and his own struggles with alcohol dependency.
