HEAP enrollment now under way

NYSEG and RG&E would like to remind their customers that enrollment for New York’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP). Customers who feel they may need assistance this winter should act as soon as possible and determine their eligibility. The enrollment period for HEAP opened on November 2, according to the New York Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA).

HEAP is for helping low-income people pay for the cost of heating their homes. Those eligible may receive one regular HEAP benefit per year, but may also be eligible for emergency benefits should they run out of fuel. Eligibility and benefits are based on a variety of factors, such as household size, what your primary heating source is, income, young children or seniors present, or permanent disabilities.

Please note that the comment period on new statewide land regulations by the NYS Office of Renewable Energy Siting has been EXTENDED from November 16 until December 7.
Iberdrola a Spanish corporation and the world’s 5th largest electricity company, now owns RG&E, as well as NYSE&G. Under the draft regulations, as a “transportation company”, they would have the ability to invoke eminent domain for facilities and transmission lines. If you are in these companies’ service areas, please be sure your elected officials are aware of, and commenting on, this and other profound threats to local land control and “home rule”. Our two small towns north of “the Park” recently resisted a takeover of our communities by subsidiaries of Iberdrola. Take our advice, you do not want to go through the same brutal process. These draft rules accelerate, implement, and and fast track industrial-scale wind, solar and battery energy storage facilities in New York. More information is at http://www.nnywind.org.
