Here’s a glimpse of what is planned for SUNY-ESF’s Adirondack Interpretive Center (AIC) for the remainder of September, heading into October. Programs include a variety of walks, hikes, and a Halloween-themed educational program called Skull Skills. Pre-registration is required for all programs.
Saturday, September 10th – 9:30 to 11:00 am
Black Bear Woods Walk
Come along for an easy guided walk as we learn about black bears in the Adirondacks. We’ll look for signs of bears on our trails, discuss the implications of a changing climate on black bears, and learn about bear safety. Bring your trail shoes and your best bear stories.

Saturday, September 24th – 10:00 am to noon
Introduction to Mushroom Identification Walk
Sandy Bureau, owner of High Peaks Shiitake, will lead a guided foray to look at the beauty and diversity of mushrooms found in the region. This is an introduction to mushroom ID and will not focus on edibles, but on the characteristics of different groups of fungi.

Late Migrant and Resident Bird Walk
Our volunteer trail guide and experienced birder, Miok Salz, will lead this morning’s walk on the AIC trails to look for our late migrating and resident birds.

Night Hike
Join us for an early evening exploration of the AIC trails under the full moon. This guided walk will focus on the unique adaptations of nocturnal animals. If we’re lucky, we might hear an owl. Headlamps will be provided.

Skull Skills
Don’t be spooked by skulls. Just in time for Halloween, learn about how skulls evolved, what their functions is, and what characteristics to look for to identify different groups of animals from their skull. We’ll walk and talk as we take an easy stroll along one of the AIC trails.
