“Down Memory Lane,” an exhibit of watercolors spanning the more than 55-year career of Jacqueline Altman, will be the featured show at the Adirondack Artists Guild during the month of November. It will open on Friday, November 4 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., and will close on November 29.
“The question I often get while taking my turn working in the Adirondack Artists Guild gallery is ‘How long have you been painting?'” Altman said. “That has been a difficult question to answer. The easiest answer is ‘When I arrived in Saranac Lake in 1964.’ Revisiting the first watercolors I did here surprised me. Discovering how the brushwork was always there was a revelation. Seeing paintings of views I was so lucky to have across Lake Flower from Riverside Drive brought back memories of what once was that shoreline as illustrated in Snow Across Lake Flower.'”
The people and places I have grown to know and love by living here are an integral part of these paintings, Altman continued.
“The works in this show explore the idea of how my style and subject matter has evolved over time and resulted in my most recent paintings of the Adirondack landscape,” she said. “Most have been painted ‘en plein air.’ I have thought about the wonderful friends who encouraged me, the artists who often painted beside me, the artists/teachers who shared their expertise and favorite painting spots and never held back on their knowledge. I hope that shows in my work and that I continue that tradition. All the paintings in the show have been created between the years 1965 (my first winter living in Saranac Lake) and the fall of 2022.”
