ADKX to host Halfway in Hamilton event July 9 in celebration of 100th anniversary of Northville-Placid Trail

Two hikers on a trail

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Northville-Placid Trail (NPT), a 138-mile route that transverses the Adirondack Park, those who have hiked any part of the trail are invited to put on their best hiking apparel for a celebration and a once-in-100-years photo (with a goal of 138 hikers to mark all 138 miles!) at the Adirondack Experience (ADKX), which is located near the halfway mark of the trail in Hamilton County.

The NPT immerses hikers in adventure, wilderness, and history. The Halfway in Hamilton celebration includes a day of meaningful activities on Tuesday, July 9 that offer a connection to nature, the hiking community, and the history/memorable journeys along the NPT. Beginning at 10 am, participants can partake in a guided nature walk with Naturalist, Adirondack Guide, and author Ed Kanze and ADKX Collections Manager Doreen Alessi-Holmes along a section of the NPT in the Blue Mountain Wilderness Area.

In the afternoon, attendees are invited to the ADKX campus for a campfire, s’mores, and stories from the trail by area hikers Heidi and Peter Roland. Julia Goren, Deputy Executive Director of the Adirondack Mountain Club will deliver a Trail Talk program, that will include stories of the trail’s construction, its current state, and how sustainable trail design could improve the NPT for the future. Like all trails, the NPT has its share of personal stories, which will be interspersed throughout the presentation.

Visitors can also enjoy an NPT-themed scavenger hunt, lean-to art activity in the ADKX Art Lab and tour ADKX’s new temporary exhibit Trail Makers: 100 Years of the Northville-Placid Trail. This new exhibition features works from the museum’s art, photo, guidebook, and map collections and connects directly to objects on view permanently, especially stories about hiking and trails as well as the beloved Adirondack figure Noah John Rondeau.
