Paul Smith’s College professor Dr. Curt Stager collects a core sample from Lake Champlain.

Saranac Lake, NY — Visitors to Lake Champlain will soon be able to learn about the ecological and cultural diversity of the lake and its surrounding area through music and sound. The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) has been awarded a $40,000 grant to support an interpretive music project that celebrates regional biodiversity and human diversity while engaging American and Canadian audiences in a shared artistic experience of the Champlain Basin.

The “Watershed Voices” project — a collaboration of regional partners including ANCA’s Adirondack Diversity Initiative and McClure Productions Inc. — was awarded the grant through the Lake Champlain Basin Artist-in-Residence Program and NEIWPCC, a regional commission that helps the states of the Northeast preserve and advance water quality.

Lake Placid’s Community Day set for June 4, Distinguished Volunteer of the Year awards announced

Lake Placid, NY – The fifth annual Lake Placid Community Day celebration will take place on Sunday, June 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the North Elba Horse Show Grounds. The event features live entertainment, exhibits, activities and refreshments. Residents, seasonal homeowners, those who work in the town and those who volunteer their time and effort for various events are encouraged to attend.

The annual celebration features live music by locally based band Quantum Cosmic, featuring members of Annie and the Water. Representatives from more than 30 not-for-profit organizations will be on-hand to share information about their work within the community. Food and beverages will be provided throughout the day by representatives from the Lake Placid Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, along with a number of community-based establishments.

Great Camp Sagamore’s Community Day set for June 11

Raquette Lake, NY – Great Camp Sagamore is hosting Community Day on Sunday, June 11, 2023. Guests are welcome to gather for free self-guided walking tours throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and also for brunch in the camp’s historic Dining Hall from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for a fee. Donations are encouraged. The Dining Hall will be available to visitors for brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on a rolling basis and will be served buffet style by Sagamore’s culinary team led by Chef Annie Prizzi.

American Legion Post 1392 of Indian Lake offers to retire worn, unusable American flags

The American Legion Post 1392 of Indian Lake, NY is seeking the public’s participation in respectfully disposing of worn, torn, and unusable American flags. American Legion Post 1392, Commander Ken Cannan said it has recently come to their attention that American flags were sent to transfer/dump stations in order to dispose of them.

Stewards return to popular high peaks summits

Lake Placid, NY — The Adirondack High Peaks Summit Stewardship Program has started its 34th season of protecting New York’s alpine ecosystem. Summit stewards will be educating hikers on high peaks summits—namely Marcy, Algonquin, Wright, and Cascade—through Indigenous People’s Day.

“We are excited to continue the important work of protecting New York’s alpine ecosystem,” said Liam Ebner, ADK Summit Steward Coordinator. “The Summit Stewardship Program has been and continues to be one of the best examples we have of an outreach effort that has successfully shown people how to protect sensitive ecosystems while they enjoy them.”

Adirondack Life & Adirondack Land Trust to present My Adirondacks kids’ photography project

Jay, NY – Adirondack Life and Adirondack Land Trust announce My Adirondacks, a project that invites kids, ages 5 to 17, to photograph an aspect of the natural world within the Adirondack Park and share why it matters to them. Submissions can be sent to aledit@adirondacklife.com and will be accepted now through August 19, 2023.

The following information is required:

· Name and age.

· Where in the Adirondack Park the photo was taken.

· Up to a few sentences about why the image matters to the person who took it.

Paul Smith’s College holds 2023 graduation ceremony

On Sunday, May 21 Paul Smiths’ College held its commencement ceremony celebrating more than 100 students who completed their academic degrees. Together, faculty, staff, students, and their families celebrated the immense accomplishments of the class of 2023.

Paul Smith’s College, known as the College of the Adirondacks because it is the only four-year institution of higher education in the Adirondack Park is surrounded by 14,000 acres of pristine lakes, trails, and natural beauty. Led by faculty ranked number one in the region for undergraduate teaching, PSC has a strong foundation of hands-on learning that prepare students for successful careers.

LGLC Awarded $68,300 from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program

Bolton Landing, NY – The Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) has been awarded two grants, totaling $68,300, from the 2023 New York State Conservation Partnership Program (NYSCPP), which is funded through New York State’s (NYS) Environmental Protection Fund. The Land Trust Alliance administers the Conservation Partnership Program in coordination with NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

A $44,500 grant will fund improvements at Peggy’s Point, the LGLC’s beloved waterfront park in the Town of Hague. The work will redevelop the trail and add amenities to make the park and waterfront more accessible. Educational signage will enhance the visitor experience, and native plantings will strengthen the shoreline against erosion from storm events.

Herkimer County Soil & Water Conservation District Hosts 2023 Envirothon

Those with the Herkimer County Soil & Water Conservation District were pleased to report that the 28th annual Herkimer County Envirothon was a huge success. The event took place on Wednesday, May 10 at Herkimer College. Event organizers expressed gratitude to all generous donors and volunteers for contributing to the 2023 event. This year, Central Valley Academy, Mount Markham, Poland, and Herkimer County BOCES Conservation all sent teams.

North Country Juneteenth Colors of Freedom Community Award nominations accepted through May 31

This year the North Country Juneteenth Colors of Freedom celebration of the region’s role in the fight against slaver which highlights the Underground Railroad work in the area and avid abolitionist, John Brown, will be held on June 17, 18, 19 and 20. As part of the celebration, an individual, business, organization or politician will be recognized with a North Country Juneteenth Colors of Freedom Community Award. This award will be given to a person(s) who has honored an individual or organization in the Adirondack/North Country region who has made a positive impact on African American members in the community and actively promoted the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Adirondack Land Trust Receives $174,300 in Grant Funding for Cobble Hill Trail Improvements

Keene, NY — The Adirondack Land Trust has received a $99,300 grant from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program and a $75,000 grant from the North Elba Local Advancement and Enhancement Fund for a total of $174,300 in funding for trail improvements at Cobble Hill, a popular Lake Placid hiking destination.

“These generous grants support the work of people coming together to solve problems for community benefit,” says Adirondack Land Trust Stewardship & GIS Specialist Becca Halter. “These funds will help to improve this beloved community hike with a beautiful view of the village, Mirror Lake, and the surrounding area.”

Whiteface Mountain region to host race events this June

Wilmington, NY – The Whiteface Mountain region of upstate New York is gearing up to host a series of race events this June. The Whiteface Mountain Uphill Bike and Foot races, along with the Wilmington Whiteface mountain bike race, take place in early June. The Wilmington Whiteface Whiskey Run takes place a few weeks later, closer to the end of the month.

According to Michelle Preston, director of the Whiteface Visitors Bureau, the events entice participants from throughout the Northeast who love the region’s natural beauty and challenging courses.

“We are so excited to host these events again this year,” she said. “The races provide an opportunity to showcase the area’s rugged backcountry terrain, beautiful scenery, and abundant forests, allowing participants to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy the great outdoors while participating in a sport they love.”
