The Whallonsburg Grange Offers Year-Round Events
Autumn is coming to the Adirondack in full force and The Whallonsburg Grange Hall is ready with another season of events and activities. According to The Grange Manager Kate Ritter the facility focuses on providing entertainment to visitors and locals mainly during the fall, winter and spring seasons where there may not be as many other activities going on.
“As one of the only year-round facilities in the area we provide a fresh schedule each year,” Ritter says. “We have music, theatre, film, and a Lyceum lecture series. The first [Champlain Film Society] film of the season will be coming up on September 16. We always try to provide a range of events that are multifaceted and beneficial to the community.”
The Champlain Valley Film Society kicks off the fall season with Franz, Peterson, The Big Sick, I, Daniel Blake, To Be a Miss, Dunkirk, and Dawson City: Frozen Time. Films take place twice each month, on Saturdays at 7:30 pm. » Continue Reading.
30th Rustic Furniture Fair & Antiques Show in Blue Mtn Lake
Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX) will host their 30th annual Rustic Furniture Fair on September 9-10, and Antiques Show and Sale September 16, 2017.
The fairs are opportunities to view, learn about, and purchase distinctive furniture and furnishings from emerging and established artisans and makers and antiques and artworks from dealers from across the country. Pendragon’s Fall Classic: George Orwell’s 1984
Adapted for the stage by Michael Gene Sullivan and directed by Mason Wagner, an adaptation of George Orwell’s novel 1984 will be performed at View in Old Forge on Sunday, September 10, at 3 pm.
The show is produced by Pendragon Theatre and will feature Leslie Dame, Bren Gotham, Terry Kemp, Chris Leifheit, Mark Mainville, and Liv Paulson.
1984 is directed by Mason Wagner, a 2010 graduate of Saranac Lake High School who has spent the past several years working in theatre in Montana after receiving his BFA in Acting from the University of Montana. » Continue Reading.
Farm 2 Fork, Hobo Fest In Saranac Lake This Weekend
Saranac Lake’s Farm 2 Fork Festival started through the passion and forethought of the former Adirondack Green Circle’s Founding Director Gail Brill. Brill wanted to bring attention to regional farmers and provide a connection to the consumers buying their product. Her vision continues this weekend with the 8th Annual Farm 2 Fork Festival at Saranac Lake’s Riverside Park.
The Adirondack Cookout themed event continues Brill’s celebration of local food in the most delicious way possible, right onto our plates. 3rd Annual ViewFest Music, Art, and Food Festival Planned
View will host its third annual ViewFest Music, Art, and Food Festival, previously known as Adirondack Music Festival, September 22, 2017 through September 24, 2017 in Old Forge.
ViewFest combines food, art, workshops, craft vendors, demonstrations, and musical performances. The craft fair runs Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday 10 am to 3 pm. Local restaurants, food, and artistic demonstrators will be on site Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. » Continue Reading.
Adirondack Folk Instrument Documentation Days Set
Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) has invited the public to attend the upcoming folk instrument documentation event on Thursday, August 31st from 2 to 6 pm at The Whallonsburg Grange Hall.
This event will focus on the making and keeping of folk instruments, such as fiddles, guitars, and other instruments that are part of regional, community, or family musical traditions.

Sandra Hildreth: Painting the Eclipse
I painted the eclipse of August 21, 2017. No, not a solid black background with an orange disk with a bite taken out of it. I went out to a favorite painting location and I painted the effects of the eclipse on the Adirondack landscape!
It was kind of a crazy idea, but I figured a 60% reduction of the amount of light coming from the sun should have some kind of an optical impact on the world around us. I considered several options and then went to the Harrietstown Cemetery hill, on Route 86, where there is an unobstructed view looking east towards Whiteface, Moose and McKenzie Mountains. They are always bathed in light during the afternoon, so I figured the reduction of light would effect the colors and values. » Continue Reading.
Community Fund Awards Grants for 2017
The Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region (CFGMR) has awarded grants totaling $15,020 to 19 organizations. This year’s grant recipients will be honored at a ceremony at Seagle Music Colony on Friday, August 25 at 4 pm.
CFGMR was established in 2005 by a group of concerned residents who partnered with Adirondack Foundation to create a permanent charitable grant making fund to support effective programs to meet pressing needs and improve the quality of life in the towns of Chester, Horicon, Johnsburg, Minerva and Schroon. CFGMR supports community needs and opportunities such as historic preservation, education, community beautification, culture and the arts, as well as programs for youth, senior citizens and veterans. » Continue Reading.
8th View Plein Air Paint Out Call For Artists
View has invited artists to participate in their 8th Annual Plein Air Paint Out (PAPO) August 31, 2017 through September 2, 2017 in Old Forge.
Artists are invited to paint all around the Old Forge area, over a three day period; a list of suggested sites will be provided. In return, each artist is asked to donate one framed, ready to hang piece of artwork for the live bidding auction held at View at 5:30 pm on Saturday, September 2. Essex County Arts & Crafts Festival Aug 30-31
An Essex County Arts and Crafts Festival will be held Wednesday and Thursday, August 30-31, at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport.
The Festival will present the work of artists and crafters currently working in the county and neighboring region. “It is a celebration of the reality that every town and hamlet throughout the county is home to numerous creative people who enrich their communities by their hand-made creations,” an announcement to the press said. “People from across the county and neighboring region have signed on to present their work. Art and Nature: A Paper-Maker in Newcomb

New Tupper Lake Regional Marketing Manager Named
The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) has announced the promotion of Katie Stuart to the position of Tupper Lake Regional Marketing Manager.
In her new role, Stuart is expected to serve as a liaison between community stakeholders, travelers, and ROOST, and supports the implementation of marketing strategies for the Tupper Lake area. She was introduced to destination marketing via an internship at ROOST during the summer of 2015, and after graduating from Keuka College in 2017, joined ROOST full time as Tupper Lake/Hamilton County Marketing Assistant. She now fills the role formerly held by Michelle Clement, who was promoted to ROOST Director of Marketing in July. » Continue Reading.
Tim Rowland’s Visit To Ausable Chasm
Many moons ago, not too far north of Old Forge, there was a tourist trap that — apparently believing that honesty was the best policy — gave itself the name of The Tourist Trap. It sold the usual fare of balsam-scented incense burners in the shape of a log cabin, birch-bark lamps and every piece of junk imaginable with a picture of a loon on it — all destined, in time, for some North Carolina yard sale.
As a child in search of a meaningful memento costing south of 75 cents, I invested in a “paperweight” that was a river pebble that had been covered with postage stamps and apathetically lacquered. This artifact stayed with me for a remarkably long period of time, serving not as a reminder of the Adirondacks, but as a reminder to stay out of tourist traps. » Continue Reading.
