Adirondack Experience Readies for Change of Season

The season is coming to a close for the Adirondack Experience, the museum on Blue Mountain Lake, but isn’t not the end of the activities. Each fall the museum gets ready for winter and provides opportunities for people to bring home a special Adirondack gift from their unique shop.

According to ADKX Director of Marketing Ausra Angermann, the museum has two planned weekends set for people to do their holiday shopping and visit beautiful Blue Mountain Lake. $150k Supporting Staff Training at Adirondack Experience

adirondack experience workshopAdirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX), has received a $156,573 grant from the Museums for America program of Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal agency.

This year, IMLS received 472 funding requests from across the U.S. and made grants to only 28% of the applicants. In recent years ADKX has received a total of $694,837 in IMLS funding, including the new award. Past funding has supported the installation of new exhibitions, the conservation of ADKX’s unique collections, and other projects. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Experience Wins $350k Collections Grant

life in the adirondacks exhibitAdirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX), has received a $350,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Sustaining Cultural Heritage Collections program.

The funds are expected to support a $1,100,000 project to replace the aging climate control systems in the largest structure on the institution’s campus, the Life in the Adirondacks building. The 45,000-square-foot building, dating to 1969, houses ADKX’s new interactive exhibition, Life in the Adirondacks. » Continue Reading.

Mohawk & Abenaki Art Market at Adirondack Experience

art by Carrie HillAdirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, (ADKX) has announced the first Mohawk and Abenaki Art Market, set for August 25-26, from 10 am to 5 pm.

The Art Market is the joint effort of the museum in collaboration with the Akwesasne Cultural Center and the Abenaki Cultural Preservation Corporation. The 2018 Mohawk and Abenaki Art Market features master and emerging indigenous artists from the Mohawk communities of Akwesasne (located where Ontario, Quebec, and New York State intersect on the map) and Kahnawake (located adjacent to the city of Montreal). » Continue Reading.

ADKX Adds Exhibit On Adirondack Segregation

Fulton Fryar in The Closet prior to its removal from Seagle Music ColonyAdirondack Experience, the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, has announced a new acquisition on view in its Life in the Adirondacks exhibition: a cramped, dilapidated shack, known as “The Closet” that for two summers was home to a young and talented African-American tenor, Fulton Fryar.

Through the combined efforts of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, the Seagle Music Colony, and Adirondack Experience, this historic artifact was saved from demolition and will help educate museum visitors about the history of racial discrimination in the Adirondack Park. » Continue Reading.

Fire Tower Fever: Adirondack Experience Event Saturday

Stillwater Mt. tower restoration ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) and Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX), have announced a celebration of fire towers and the people who restore and maintain them.

Fire Tower Fever, a family-friendly event set for July 14, 2018, at Adirondack Experience, starts at 10 am and ends at 3 pm. In between, the day offers presentations, anecdotes from volunteers involved in tower restorations, book signings, guided hikes, an introduction to the ADK Fire Tower Challenge, and Smokey Bear-themed scavenger hunts. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Museum Opens for 2018 Season

One of my favorite places to go no matter the weather is Adirondack Experience (ADKX), the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake. Though Cabin Fever lectures and special ADKX holiday store hours were available throughout the winter months, the ADKX is will be open daily from Friday, May 25 to October 14, 10 am to 5 pm, for the 2018 season.

ADKX Honoring 46ers at Benefit Gala

The Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake is set to honor The 46ers with the 2017-2018 Harold K. Hochschild Award at its annual benefit gala on Saturday, July 28 from 6 to 9 pm.

The Adirondack Forty-Sixers, Inc. is a hiking and service club whose members have climbed the summits of the 46 peaks over 4,000 feet in elevation in the Adirondack mountains of northern New York state. » Continue Reading.

30th Rustic Furniture Fair & Antiques Show in Blue Mtn Lake

Antique sleds and skis at the Antique Show and Sale Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX) will host their 30th annual Rustic Furniture Fair on September 9-10, and Antiques Show and Sale September 16, 2017.

The fairs are opportunities to view, learn about, and purchase distinctive furniture and furnishings from emerging and established artisans and makers and antiques and artworks from dealers from across the country. It’s American Mountain Men Weekend In Blue Mtn Lake

adk mountain manThis weekend, August 11-12th, visitors to the Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake will hold its annual American Mountain Men weekend, exploring life in the wilderness in the early 19th century.

During this event, visitors will experience demonstrations of firearm and bow shooting, tomahawk and knife throwing, fire starting, campfire cooking, and more, alongside educational interpreters in period dress with tents and tipis pitched throughout the museum’s 121-acre campus. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Museum Throwing 1950s Party Saturday

The Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (formerly the Adirondack Museum) will celebrate its 60th anniversary on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 10 am to 5 pm.

Fire Magick Hula Dance performances will be held at 11 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm, and 30-minute hula hoop workshops at 12:15, 2:15 and 4:15 pm. Musical performances will include the Adirondack Jazz Orchestra playing Big Band songs from the ‘50s, with a dance party by Dance Sanctuary at 11:30 am and 12:30 pm; The Non-Committals at 2:30 pm; and JamCrackers, featuring traditional and original songs of the Adirondacks, at 4 pm. » Continue Reading.

Warrensburg Anti-APA Sign Comes Down, Headed For Museum

anti-APA sign in WarrensburgOn Friday, Adirondack Experience (formally the Adirondack Museum) removed a familiar anti-Adirondack Park Agency sign on Route 9 at the north end of Warrensburg to add to their permanent collections.

The sign, seen by south-bound travelers, was erected by Ted Galusha in 2005 on the side of his house to protest the Adirondack Park Agency.

In a statement sent to the press from the Adirondack Experience, the museum said it was collecting this sign “because it is part of the ongoing conversation among Park residents, second-home owners, vacationers and conservation advocates about the future of the Adirondack Park.” » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Experience To Honor Jefferson Project

jefferson project at lake georgeThe board of trustees of the Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake will honor The Jefferson Project at Lake George with the 2017 Harold K. Hochschild Award at its annual benefit gala on Saturday, July 29 from 6 to 9 pm.

The Jefferson Project – a collaboration between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, IBM Research and The FUND for Lake George – plans to use technology and science to help protect Lake George.

The Jefferson Project recently collaborated with Adirondack Experience to install an interactive video tower highlighting the project in the museum’s newest exhibit, which officially opened July 1st. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Experience: New $8M Exhibition, Festivals and More

adirondack experienceOn Friday, May 26, the newly renamed Adirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake will open for its 60th season. A new Life in the Adirondacks exhibition, an interactive Jefferson Project at Lake George exhibition, new dining options presented by Well Dressed Food, and a pumpkin festival will join the museum’s regular schedule of fairs, special events, workshops, and artisans-in-residence programs.

With a grand opening set for Saturday, July 1, museum officials are calling the Life in the Adirondacks  exhibit “the most ambitious new exhibition in the museum’s history.” It occupies the former Roads and Rails building, where the 19,000-square-foot, $8-million interactive exhibit is expected to serve the starting point for visitors. » Continue Reading.
