Lake Placid Film Festival Announces Sequel To Online Film Festival

Virtual series to feature winners of 2020 short film competition

Following the successful launch of its first-ever virtual film festival this fall, the Lake Placid Film Festival announced it will host a second online short-film series starting in February 2021.

“We know how hungry audiences are to see movies and gather with fellow film-lovers, and the response to our first-ever virtual film festival proved it,” said Gary Smith, chair of the Adirondack Film Society, the festival’s parent organization. “It was such a thrill to reach so many people from around the world. And instead of waiting until next fall, we’ve decided to do it again this winter.”

Vt Director Screening ‘Wetware’ in Placid Friday

The Adirondack Film Society (AFS) continues to bring thought-provoking films to the Adirondacks as part of the winter AFS Screening Series.

Wetware, a sci-fi film from Vermont Director Jay Craven, will make its Adirondack debut at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts this Friday, February 28th. Fridays Are for Film Lovers in Lake Placid

Adirondack Film SocietyThe Adirondack Film Society (AFS) Screening Series at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA) is set to return for its sixth year with a new Friday-evenings only schedule and a lineup of four films, including two of this year’s Best-Picture Oscar nominees.

South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho’s social-class-comedy-turned-thriller Parasite will be screened on January 31st and Taika Waititi’s World War II satire, Jojo Rabbit, featuring an Academy-Award-nominated performance by Scarlett Johansson, on March 27th. » Continue Reading.

Lake Placid Film Festival Extends to Five Day Format

This year’s Lake Placid Film Festival (LPFF) is a mixture of adventure and nostalgia as it enters its second year in its autumn time slot.

Film Forum Name Change, 2018 Festival Moved To October

Adk Film Commission’s Filmmaker Resource Guide

Adirondack Film SocietyThe Adirondack Film Commission is seeking information from local businesses for free listings in a Filmmaker Resource Guide.

The Film Commission — which is operated by the Adirondack Film Society to promote film, TV and video production in Essex County, and to assist filmmakers and videographers once they’re here — is developing a resource guide to help filmmakers and production companies find the services they need from local businesses. Such services range widely from camera operators and sound mixers to electricians and caterers — essentially, any service or skill that might be needed before, during, or after a film, TV or video shoot, including commercials. » Continue Reading.

Lake Placid Film Forum Moves to October

The Adirondack Film Society (AFS) is moving the Lake Placid Film Forum from early June to late October. Through various meetings and the appointment of a new festival director, Gary Smith, the AFS board picked dates to follow three major film festivals.

New Aaron Woolf Film Being Shown in Lake Placid

david and jack hallquist The fall season of the Adirondack Film Society extends into December with a new documentary by Aaron Woolf, best known in the region as the former Democratic Party candidate for Congress who was defeated by Republican Elise Stefanik in 2014.

Outside the region, Woolf is known as a filmmaker, most notably for his documentary about agribusiness, King Corn (2007) His newest documentary is Denial, about gender transition, renewable energy and climate change. Denial follows Vermont electric utility CEO David Hallquist as his company struggles with generating and delivering electricity in the face of climate change. In the process, David Hallquist reveals to his family a lifelong dream to transition to Christine Hallquist.  Hallquist’s son Derek directed the film with Woolf serving as one of the film’s producers, writers and co-creators. » Continue Reading.

New Adirondack Film Society Screening Series at LPCA

Cezanne et Moi posterThe Adirondack Film Society (AFS) has announced their 2017 Fall lineup of the Adirondack Film Society Screening Series, which will be held at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LCPA).

On Thursday and Saturday, September 28 and 30, at 7 pm, the season opens with The Lost City of Z, the true story of British explorer Percy Fawcett’s two-decade search for a lost city in the Amazon.

Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21 at 7 pm brings A Quiet Passion, in which Cynthia Nixon, who is probably best known for her work in the film and TV versions of Sex in the City, delivers a triumphant performance as the great American poet Emily Dickinson. » Continue Reading.

Film Society Screenings At Schroon Lake’s Strand Theater

On Saturday and Sunday, August 12-13 the Easy Screening Series will feature a film screening of The Night We Met with a filmmaker Q&A. The Night We Met, was shot in Schroon Lake and received its world-premiere screenings at the Strand in August 2016.

Albany-area-based, husband-and-wife filmmaking team of Jon Russell Cring, the movie’s director and co-writer, and Tracy Nichole Cring, its other co-writer, director of photography, and editor, will be on hand to introduce the film and take questions following the screening. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Film Society Screening Series In Schroon Lake

unspecifiedFor the first time, the Adirondack Film Society (AFS) has partnered with the Strand Theatre to bring special curated screenings to the Schroon Lake. With a mission to advance the art and appreciation of film and filmmaking in the Adirondack Region, AFS welcomed the opportunity to be the nonprofit conduit for the New York State Council of the Arts (NYSCA) grant funding the Strand Theatre’s digital film upgrade.

Known primarily for the annual Lake Placid Film Forum and “Mostly Monthly Adirondack Film Society Screening Series,” AFS now brings two summer events to the Strand’s digital screen, July 16-17 and August 13-14.

According to AFS Operations Manager Fred Balzak the July 16-17 event present a pairing of two classic films with the brilliance of author John DiLeo’s expertise on films. AFS doesn’t just present films, they are known for bringing experts in the film industry, directors and other industry professionals attached to the project. Guest Essay: Do Local Movie Theaters Have A Future?

Einstein said that if you want to understand something better, try and explain it to your grandmother.  The more I find myself talking about the digital conversion issue which faces independently owned theaters, the more feel like I understand it.  But, it’s challenging.  The topic is complex, and not black and white.  And the rabbit hole, it seems, gets deeper and deeper.

In 2012, the Lake Placid Film Forum hosted a Panel Discussion called “Do Movie Theaters Have a Future?”  The answer, I have come to believe in the months since, is a resounding Yes.  And the road to success is one that literally takes a village. » Continue Reading.
