High Peaks Cyclery will host a Ski Song Sing-along from 7 to 9 pm Saturday, February 18 at their next-door Guide House at 2733 Main Street in Lake Placid. Live music will be provided by Barry Oreck.
This free sing-along and beer-share will provide the chance to listen to popular ski songs and share favorite beers with the group.

Eight months ago, the makings of Lake Placid’s newest soon-to-be brewery were tucked away in one of the Adirondacks’ most unusual places — a decommissioned Atlas Missile Silo built during the height of the Cold War. The silo, now operating as Atlas Hoofed It Farm, is perhaps the perfect site to age Big Slide Brewery’s Grand Opening beer however, a Russian Imperial Stout dubbed “To Russia with Love.”
While the kegs were aging, the plans for Big Slide Brewery & Public House were also coming to fruition. The new restaurant and brewery located at 5686 Cascade Road in Lake Placid features a hybrid 3.5/5 barrel brew-house at its center, modern industrial-style dining room, and a semi-open kitchen. My family has seen the Budweiser Clydesdales during trips to Rhode Island and they really are a magnificent sight to see. With all the times that I’ve seen them in various parades however, I never knew about the the visiting Clydesdales’ other events. We couldn’t waste the hour-and-a-half between interviews so decided to use our time wisely and snag an elusive Happy Hour Passport stamp (and a refreshment) at the Big Moose Inn in Eagle Bay before venturing on to BarkEater Craft Brewery.

There is nothing better than a road trip on the Happy Hour Trail to reaffirm our belief that you always meet the nicest people in the Adirondacks. A full day of travel to interview and tour two breweries in the Old Forge and Tug Hill regions covered a lot of ground. Venturing through Eagle Bay, Old Forge, and finally to Lowville, we were met with happy, friendly faces at every turn. Without exception, whether they held the door for us at a convenience store or took time from their busy schedules to share their knowledge of brewing, every person we encountered was upbeat and friendly. Happy Hour in the High Peaks is at it again! The first Happy Hour Tour had us hopping all over the Adirondack Park on a quest for the 46 bars that best represent the diversity of the Adirondacks. A hiker who posted photos on Facebook of a keg party on top of Phelps Mountain over Columbus Day weekend has been ticketed by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Raja Bhatt of Queens was ticketed for allegedly taking part in a “day-use group” with more than fifteen people — the legal limit for a hike in the High Peaks Wilderness Area.
Bhatt, who is thirty-two, said he didn’t organize the hike or the keg party.
“I was simply on the summit with some friends, and some friend of a friend brought a keg,” he said. » Continue Reading.
Oktupperfest originated at Big Tupper Ski Resort in the 1970s, and returned in 2011 after a 10-year hiatus. According to Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce Events Administrator Adam Baldwin, this annual event is family-friendly and fun for all ages.
Baldwin says, “Oktupperfest is a family oriented event filled with live music for everyone. There are tons of things to do. The chairlift is a one-way ride, but it isn’t a huge mountain so people can walk back down from the top. We gear the event toward families, not just kids. We have German food, vendors and kids games as well as adult activities such as the pumpkin slingshot.” » Continue Reading.
The 2015 Tupper Lake Brew-ski Trail will be open Saturday, March 7, 2015 at the Tupper Lake Cross Country Ski Center. The event will include six regional brewers sampling their brews along nearly a mile of trail for cross country skis or snowshoes. Sledding is available as well.
Brewers this year include Adirondack Brewery, Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, Great Adirondack Brewing Company, St. Lawrence Brewing Company, Blue Line Brewery, and Raquette River Brewing. A food concession will be provided by Arthur’s from Dolgeville. » Continue Reading.
Paul Smith’s College will offer a minor in craft-beer studies and operations beginning this fall.
The new minor prepares students for careers in micro and craft brewing. “Although hands-on, practical brewing will be an aspect of the minor, the main intent is not to create beer brewers,” said Prof. Joe Conto in a statement to the press. “Rather, the goal is to prepare students for all the management, administrative and operations opportunities the craft-beer industry has created and supports.”
The craft-beer industry boasts impressive numbers. More than 2,700 craft breweries were in operation in 2013, selling 15.6 million barrels of beer. In that same year, sales grew 18 percent by volume and 20 percent in dollars. Craft brewing provides an estimated 110,273 jobs in the United States. Craft-beer production and sales are expected to grow even further in the college’s home state of New York. » Continue Reading.
