Plastic Bakelite Documentary Highlights Adirondack Connection

August Events At ADKX Adirondack Museum

American Mountain Men courtesy ADKXAdirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX) has announced its roster of events for the month of August. Starting on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9 and 10, the American Mountain Men are returning to the ADKX.

They will pitch tents, build fires, cook rustic meals, demonstrate their firearm, bow shooting, tomahawk and knife throwing skills, and many more traditional wilderness trades during their annual weekend encampment. » Continue Reading.

Eckford Chain Septic Initiative Announced

eckford chain mapCommunity groups and a local septic service company are cooperating to provide discounted septic system pumping to homeowners in the Eckford Chain watershed, which includes Blue Mountain, Eagle and Utowana Lakes, and is the headwaters of the Raquette River.

While Blue Mountain Lake has some of the highest quality water in the state and there is no immediate threat, cottages and houses, some with systems that are quite old, grace the shorelines and tributaries and a pumped-out septic system works better. The goal is to enhance awareness about septic and sewage issues and to inspire homeowners with septic systems to take timely action, perhaps learning the location of their tank and leach field for the first time. » Continue Reading.

Two New Maps of Blue Mountain Lake

The printed contour map reveals dramatic underwater terrain. Sharp cliffs tumble into cavities, giant glacial erratics are scattered about, and unseen underwater ridges link some islands while deep holes separate others.

Blue Mountain Lake straddles the divide between the Saint Lawrence and Hudson watersheds and is ringed by mountains whose slopes continue below the surface. An enormous northeast to southwest glacial groove runs under West Bay and includes the lake’s deepest spot. That low point is 102.7 feet down where there is a huge erratic. » Continue Reading.

ADKX Museum Opening Boathouse of Historic Watercraft

Adirondack Experience Now Open

The folks at Adirondack Experience: the Museum on Blue Mountain Lake, which opens for the season today, have spent the winter updating and adding to its exhibits and creating new ones. The popular “Great Outdoors” and “Life In the Adirondacks” exhibits remain along with other permanent and scenic displays.

The new Curious Creatures exhibit explores the relationship of humans, nature, and animals through taxidermy. Some of these private pieces have never been on public exhibition before.  Private Views: Collecting the Adirondacks features 19th century artists inspired to paint an Adirondack landscape. Input Sought on Central Adirondacks Byway Signage

Existing signs along Route 28 between the hamlets of North River and North CreekThe Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway — a corridor that winds along Route 28 through the Hudson River watershed — will soon feature new signs to engage travellers with natural, cultural and recreational attributes along the route.

The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) is leading a project to update and enhance interpretive signage along the Scenic Byway between North Creek and Blue Mountain Lake.
