SARANAC LAKE, NY – A brand new mountain race – featuring skiing, biking, kayaking/canoeing, and running – will be held on Saturday morning, March 4th to highlight the abundant outdoor recreation opportunities in the region, organizers announced.

Current Events: Exploring via a new canoe

I had been eyeing this section of river for a few years now. Its twists and turns carved through the High Peaks anorthosite in an irresistible ribbon of smooth mountain drainage. I used to drive along its banks every day last winter on my way to work at Cascade when it was covered in snow and ice. The way the snow blanketed it was just too tranquil not to dream of paddling the water when it was liquid again. All I needed then was spring and a boat, and I spent the winter scheming up a plan to acquire the latter.
This past summer I had the good fortune of working in the Vermont paddle-tourism industry. Dollars from Massachusetts and Connecticut accumulated in my pockets hoping to be turned into a watercraft. Come November, I took a nice chunk of those dollars over to Tupper Lake and spent them on a Minnesota-made canoe. Late this April, I plunked that canoe into the river here in Lake Placid just a tri-lake over from where I first held a single-blade paddle. How’s that for full circle?

Paddling and Covid-19
I have such gratitude for the Adirondack woods and waters during this Covid-19 pandemic. Paddling my solo canoe is the best. When I’m with friends, we easily keep our social distance as we float on the open waters and maneuver up a stream bed.
Keeping six-feet away from the crowds at canoe access sites this summer is another matter. Often it’s difficult finding a parking spot with enough room to keep clear of others walking around their cars while lifting canoes and kayaks. My friends and I wear our masks, but not all do. Families are relieved that their kids can run around, which they do in the parking lots and beaches that serve as canoe and kayak put-in and take-outs. I stick with water access points that are maintained for use by cartop water craft, rather than launching sites appropriate for motor boats.
Plans Afloat For New Ownership of 90-Miler, Other Races
The Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) and the Adirondack Watershed Alliance (AWA) are working towards a transfer of AWA events and activities, including the Adirondack Canoe Classic, to NFCT’s care before the launch of the 2021 paddling season.
AWA, managed by Brian and Grace McDonnell for over two decades, currently coordinates the ‘Round the Mountain Canoe and Kayak Race and the Celebrate Paddling Invitational in Saranac Lake, the Long Lake Long Boat Regatta, and the Adirondack Canoe Classic, known more commonly as the 90-Miler. » Continue Reading.
Lorraine Duvall: A Visit to Paddle Boreas Ponds
“I’m from Canajoharie, the others from Albany and Catskill,” a women said when I saw her with two friends on Boreas Ponds last week.
“We met through the Facebook page ‘Paddling in the Adirondacks’ and we’ve been going on trips together ever since,” she said, “often driving hours, as we did today.”

A 90-Miler Adirondack Canoe Classic Watcher’s Guide
The 37th Annual Adirondack Canoe Classic, the 3-day, 90-mile paddling event from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, will take place September 6 – 8, 2019. Here is what you need to know:
The 90-Miler attracts a full contingent of solo, tandem, 4 person and 8 person canoes, solo and tandem kayaks and one and two person guide boats. More than 600 people, from 22 different states, are expected to take part during the fall foliage season. » Continue Reading.
Featured Paddle: Hoel, Turtle, Slang, and Long Ponds, Lake Clear
Hoel, Turtle, Slang, and Long Pond are part of a route known as the Nine Carries located in the St. Regis Canoe Area.
Beginning at the parking area for Hoel Pond, paddle approximately one mile across the pond until you reach the train crossing. A culvert passes under the tracks into Turtle Pond. Carry over the tracks or pass through the culvert if there is enough water flowing through. Turtle pond is a much smaller narrower body of water. At about eight tenths of a mile long, paddling this pond can be much less demanding. There is no carry between Turtle and Slang Ponds. The two are connected by a winding narrow waterway. Paddlers should be cautious of downed branches, beaver dams, and low water through this passageway. » Continue Reading.
Brant Lake Canoe Race Revived
The North Warren Chamber of Commerce has announced the return of the Great Brant Lake Canoe Race has been set for August 17th. Paddlers of canoes, kayaks, SUPs and guide boats will begin at the north end of the lake and paddle 5.5 miles into the outlet, finishing just above the Mill Pond dam in the Hamlet of Horicon. » Continue Reading.
Indian Lake Poker Paddle Set for Saturday
The Indian Lake Poker Paddle has been set for Saturday, July 20th. Attendees will start and finish at Byron Park, on Lake Adirondack. Check in starts at 10:30 am, with the paddle and card drawings from noon to 3:30 pm.
The Indian Lake Poker Paddle is an annual event sponsored by the Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce. Attendees explore the shores and bays of the scenic Lake Adirondack. Anything that floats and is propelled by a paddle qualifies including canoes, kayaks, SUPs, rowboats, guideboats, and rafts. » Continue Reading.
Feeder Canal Alliance Canoe and Kayak Race, June 1st
The Annual Glens Falls Feeder Canal Alliance Canoe and Kayak race has been set for June 1st.
The 5-mile race begins at the Feeder Dam on Richardson Street in Queensbury, and ends at the Martindale Boat Basin in Hudson Falls. The route follows the historic Glens Falls Feeder Canal, first constructed in the 1820s and still in use for commercial purposes today. » Continue Reading.
Paddling Film Festival Visits Lake Placid Saturday
Some great canoe and kayak adventure films from around the world will be shown when the Paddling Film Festival World Tour visits the Lake Placid Center for the Arts on Saturday, April 27th.
Hosted by Adirondack Lakes and Trails and the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, the event is intended to help participants build connections to the larger paddling community. Northern Forest Canoe Trail Online Auction Underway
The Northern Forest Canoe Trail’s 14th annual Online Auction kicked off November 1st, offering paddling enthusiasts a variety of outdoor-related items and experiences to bid on.

BluMouLA BuFuRa Paddle Race in Blue Mountain Lake
For the third year, the Blue Mountain Lake Association will be hosting racers of the BluMouLA BuFuRa along the beautiful shores of Blue Mountain, Eagle, and Utowama lakes. This community event pulls together paddlers of all levels and abilities for three races of various lengths. The 14-mile, 7-mile, and a 1.5-mile courses direct participants throughout the bays and channels of the three bodies of water.
According to Blue Mountain Lake Association Race Organizer Andy Coney, the race is open to any canoes, kayaks, guideboats, SUPS and shells. There has even been a war canoe in past events.
