Great Backyard Bird Count: Turkeys, chickadees, blue jays & more

Well, we finally had a whole week of winter at one time with [morning] temperatures in single digits (even below zero a couple of days) and snow four days in a row. That kept the snowmobilers riding through the weekend, but trails hit by the sun are bare again with all that traffic. There were a few accidents, four went in the open water of the Inlet channel and one snowmobiler hit a pressure crack on Indian Lake. A rescue vehicle going to that accident went through the ice, [they] self-rescued and got out. The injured snowmobiler was brought to shore and a waiting ambulance.

Remembering the Atomic Project, and the hydrochloric acid incident of 1956

More spring-like weather this week, [with] temperatures up to 51 [degrees] on Wednesday, [February 15], and I had a Red Wing Blackbird at the feeder. Then it was up to 49 [degrees] on Thursday, [February 16] with some rain and snow late in the day. Friday, [February 17] I went to Utica and the temperature was 35 [degrees] all the way down, with wet snow falling. [I] got my truck serviced and headed home and it was still 35 degrees there, but went down to 22 [degrees] by the time I hit Old Forge. [There was] no rain or snow [at the time], just a trace overnight, but the temperature zipped down to 10 [degrees]. That brought the Evening Grosbeaks into the feeder that morning and I banded eight before we went to the Chili Bowl [Luncheon] at View.

View: 16th Annual Chili Bowl Luncheon slated for Feb. 18

Old Forge, New York – The fan-favorite Chili Bowl Luncheon celebrates its 16th year at View, the Center for Arts and Culture, on Saturday, February 18 from 12 to 3 p.m. The event will include the hand-made bowls everyone knows and loves and chili from over a dozen area restaurants. Escape winter, warm up with a delicious bowl of chili, and take home a quality piece of functional artisanal art. Choose from the variety of hundreds of beautiful, hand-crafted, ceramic bowls created by many talented local and regional potters, ranging in price from $18 to $30. Everyone who purchases a bowl will be able to try the many chili variations we have to offer. Chili can be purchased without a ceramic bowl for $10.
