Grant Will Support More Preservation at Eagle Island Camp

Eagle Island, Inc. has received an award of $320,775 through the Save America’s Treasures grant program, funded by the Historic Preservation Fund, and administered by the National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Department of Interior.

Eagle Island Camp was designed in 1903 by Adirondack architect William Coulter for Levi P. Morton. Morton had served as both New York Governor and United States Vice President. The camp has been described as a quintessential and highly intact example of an American Adirondack Camp, and as perhaps the finest example of Coulter’s work. » Continue Reading.

Historic 1930s Girl Scout Camp Reopens to Campers

After a decade of disuse, the 116-year-old National Historic Landmark on Eagle Island will again be a children’s summer camp. Eagle Island Camp is starting small and with two one-week sessions of day camp for 4th, 5th, or 6th graders.

Eagle Island Camp is a Great Camp designed by architect William Coulter that contains some of his most notable rustic work. The 30-acre island is located below Upper Saranac Lake’s narrows east of Gilpin Bay. The camp was built in 1903 for Levi P. Morton, U.S. Vice President under Benjamin Harrison and later Governor of New York. » Continue Reading.

Great Camp Eagle Island Celebration Planned

Eagle Island, Inc. is sponsoring a celebration of Great Camp Eagle Island on Wednesday, August 15, at 7 pm at the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. The event will feature award-winning Adirondack folk singer Dan Berggren.

Eagle Island was designed in 1903 by Adirondack architect William Coulter for Levi P. Morton, the former U.S. Vice President and former Governor of New York. In 1910 the camp was sold to Henry Graves Jr. who donated this Great Camp to the Girl Scout Council of the Oranges, New Jersey in 1937. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003, it was operated as a summer Girl Scout Camp for 70 years thru 2008; in 2010 the Girl Scouts put Eagle Island up for sale. » Continue Reading.

Eagle Island Group Camping, Restoration Project Underway

The Town Board of Santa Clara has voted unanimously to amend the local Land Use Code to reestablish group camping on Eagle Island, located on Upper Saranac Lake.

Friends of Eagle Island (FEI) has been in discussions with the Town of Santa Clara to reestablish group camping on Eagle Island through a petition to amend the Land Use Code thereby enabling the camp to re-open. This multi-step process has involved; preparing and filing a petition for an Amendment with the Town Board, review of the Amendment by the Planning Board, a Public Hearing and the vote by the Town Board. » Continue Reading.
