Help out your local farms

In the Adirondacks we are fortunate to have a growing number of small local farms to supply us with fresh, safe, and healthy food.

It is more important then ever during the COVID-19 crises to support the growing number of small farms that rely on the community to remain viable.

If you wish to join the Adirondack Council’s Essex Farm Institute in continuing to help local farmers, below are some suggestions of how you can give your support:

Virtual Adirondack Art Activities

I live in the Adirondacks and with a stay at home order, even locals need to find ways to be able to celebrate art and community.

Though there are plenty of nationwide organizations sharing their talents,  Adirondack artists and art organizations are representing and celebrating ways to be creative in a pandemic.

Here are five options to make sure that Adirondack art is always part of your life.

DEC Issues Final Plans for Sentinel Range Wilderness

sentinel range wilderness courtesy adirondack atlasThe New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has finalized the Unit Management Plan (UMP) for the Sentinel Range Wilderness.

The Sentinel Range Wilderness is comprised of 23,874 acres of Forest Preserve lands in the towns of Keene, Jay, Wilmington, and North Elba, Essex County. The lands consist primarily of rugged, mountainous forest land with relatively few ponds and wetlands. Mountain views are one of the Wilderness Area’s main attractions, although a portion of the Jackrabbit Ski Trail also runs through the wilderness. The area borders the north side of Route 73 through Cascade Pass and includes a number of popular climbing areas. » Continue Reading.

Saranac Lake Winter Carnival – Ten Days of Winter Fun

There is no time for the winter doldrums with the Saranac Lake’s Winter Carnival just around the corner. This festival of fun, January 31-February 9, is a must for Adirondack residents and visitors alike.  First started in 1897, the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival history is as vast and varied as the community that has shaped it. Originally a one-day event, this celebration of winter has evolved to include an expansive ice palace and over 100 events and activities.

According to Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee Public Relations Chair Colleen O’Neill, the festival is a special time for everyone. The Carnival provides entertainment for visitors and locals alike and pulls the surrounding communities together. » Continue Reading.

Skate Into the New Year in Lake Placid

I’ve never been a huge fan of the celebrating New Year’s Eve, until moving to the Adirondacks where my children have grown up attending Saranac Lake’s First Night celebrations. With magic acts and live music, First Night Saranac Lake provides a central location to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

We are also an outside family, so when Christie Sausa of Lake Placid Skate Shop organized Skate into The New Year, it was a natural fit. From 10:30 pm – 12:30 am you can lace up and Skate into the New Year at the Olympic Oval. It’s a great outside alternative for families and raises funds for the local food pantry. » Continue Reading.

David Henderson: The Prince of Adirondac

Henderson MonumentIt was June and I was ensconced in the Adirondack Museum library, fortuitously avoiding an unusually muggy early summer afternoon.  I had gone there to do a little research for a work of historical fiction that I thought I might write.  By then my interest in Adirondack history was in full thrall, which made holding the document I had been presented by librarian Jerry Pepper something close to a religious experience.

It was an original letter, written in 1826, well preserved though the paper was a bit brittle and slightly darkened with age.  The script was beautiful; fluid and robust but not embellished or overly fussy.  The writing was sincere, filled with a youthful wonder and spirit of adventure but at the same time composed with a powerful energy and purpose.  Its tone was mellifluous, phrased but unforced, the work of a superb natural writer.  All in all it was – and is – a remarkable document, a singular account of a journey from the early written history of the Adirondacks. » Continue Reading.

Lake Placid Holiday Stroll 2019

There are plenty of holiday festivals and opportunities to find the perfect Adirondack gift. One of my family’s favorite places to go is Lake Placid’s Holiday Village Stroll. Yes, there are deals, tastings, and crafts to make. In addition, we have two opportunities to put the Santa suit to good use.

From Friday – Sunday, December 13-15, Lake Placid has a packed schedule of events. Visits from Santa, free ice skating at the 1932 Olympic Arena and even an Ugly Sweater Contest are just a few ways to ease into a weekend full of holiday fun. » Continue Reading.

Lake Placid Film Festival Extends to Five Day Format

This year’s Lake Placid Film Festival (LPFF) is a mixture of adventure and nostalgia as it enters its second year in its autumn time slot.

In 2018, the Adirondack Film Society made the decision to move the film festival from June to October to be able to draw from a larger pool of festival entries. Now it has extended to a five-day format (October 23-27) with extra benefits for the viewing public. » Continue Reading.

Ironville Works MapThis weekend is the final seasonal celebration for the “birthplace of the electric age.” Located at the old Crown Point Iron Company Works in Ironville, the Penfield Homestead Museum is hosting its annual celebration of everything apple. Though apples may be one of the reasons to go to the Penfield Homestead, also plan to visit the museum dedicated to preserving the history of the North Country’s ironwork industry during the 19th century. » Continue Reading.

Joe Mahay, An Adirondack Park Activist, 1946-2019

Longtime grassroots Adirondack Park environmental activist Joe Mahay died in early August at home with his family.  Joe and his wife Naomi Tannen had been living in Florence, Massachusetts, where for the past year and a half Joe had dealt with metastatic cancer and chemotherapy.

Joe was one of the founders of the Residents’ Committee to Protect the Adirondacks and twice served as its Chair, tactfully leading the organization through its formative years and a raucous debate over the future of the Adirondack Park in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Joe had a long career as an administrator at a non-profit agency working with people with developmental disabilities in Essex County and poured his volunteer time for many years into the protection of the Forest Preserve and Adirondack Park.

Hex & Hop Brewery Hosting Grand Opening

Bloomingdale is now more than just a stop for Teddy’s Ice Cream and Grill or a quick visit to Moonstone Farm, it is the new home of Hex & Hop Brewery. After deciding to make the old Bloomin’ Market its home base, the owners of Hex & Hop spent the past winter and spring meeting with local officials and farms to produce a local product that extends beyond just local brewing. The beer is a blending of farm to table in an Adirondack craft beer establishment.

For all those craft beer aficionados, the Grand Pouring is Saturday, July 27 from noon to 8 pm. Tastings and full beer descriptions are available. For anyone just looking for a nice local pub, Hex & Hop has that covered as well.  A formal ribbon-cutting will be followed by live music, food, and beer. » Continue Reading.
