Questions Surround New Frontier Town Campground Trail System

The new Frontier Town state campground was opened to great fanfare just before the July 4th holiday this year. The campground is now fully developed with campsites, trails, and amenities such as showers, playgrounds, horse stalls, pavilions, and scenic lookouts on the banks of the Schroon River, among other features. Construction of the new Paradox Brewery is well underway.

The Frontier Town Campground is designed to pay homage to the western themes of the old Frontier Town wild west amusement park that was in its heyday in the decades after the Second World War. The amusement park had become dilapidated over the years and the new campground was a State intervention to help restore the site to some form of commercial use. ADK Shakes Shakespeare Performances Returning

ADK ShakesAfter a one year hiatus, Adirondack Shakespeare Company, known locally as ADK Shakes, is returning to the mountains with new experiences, a professional cast, and performances of Macbeth and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Essex Co Cooperative Extension Celebrating Its New Home

Be Alert For Rabid Wildlife in Eastern Essex County

Nominations Sought for Second Essex County ‘Farmacy’

food access project nominationAdkAction’s Farmacy project, a mixed-use healthy food retail storefront located in Keeseville Pharmacy, is seeking to replicate the model in the second location in Essex County.

Local businesses who are interested in a partnership with AdkAction to incorporate a small farm store into their existing storefront can be nominated between now and March 1st to be considered.

Rick LeVitre Retiring From Cornell Cooperative Extension

Assemblyman Billy Jones thanks Rick LeVitre for his service to New York’s 115th District After 7 years of Executive Directorship at Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Franklin County and two years of double-duty as Executive Director at CCE of both Franklin and Essex Counties, Rick LeVitre is retiring.

I remember the apprehension I felt when Rick arrived at Franklin County Extension. I knew that our Board of Directors had been working long and hard for months; holding meetings with and about candidates, and that they’d appointed Rick to the position with good reason. But the appointment of a new Director, more often than not, is only the beginning of all sorts of organizational changes. Structural changes to the staff. If a designated driver isn’t already part of the schedule, one thing my husband and I stress to our adult children is the need to plan ahead. Out of the Closet: Adirondack Ugly Sweater Events

Even thoughtful gifts don’t always exactly fit your taste. Give that ugly sweater a chance to redeem itself (and the sweater giver) by wearing it an Adirondack ugly sweater events. Just like that bridesmaid dress we are always told can be repurposed, that festive holiday sweater can now raise funds for children’s art classes, food pantries, or even a pint of beer. Good luck.

On December 8, BluSeed Studios will host an Ugly Sweater 5K Run/Walk to help fund their annual free spring break and after school art classes for area children. Each participant will receive a raffle ticket for artisan items. Registration and the race begins at their Cedar Street location in Saranac Lake, and continues around Moody Pond to end back at BluSeed Studio for hot beverages and muffins. Admission is $20 for adults (which includes a commemorative artisan tile/trivet), $5 for students and leashed dogs, while children in strollers are free. Annual Cheese Tour Highlights Three Adirondack Farms

The leaves are just starting to change colors, which always gets my family thinking about autumn activities and ways to share the Adirondacks with visitors, family, and friends. One of our favorite things about those cool nights and crisp days is making comfort food, which usually means cheese.

For the fifth year, three local cheese farms are welcoming cheese lovers, cheese likers, or even those (gasp) who have never tried cheese, for a self-guided local tour of the farmstead operations into the daily cheese.

The Boy Who Sued Santa — And Won!

That’s no trick headline you see above. After an incident in the Adirondacks 65 years ago, Santa’s business operations in the mountains were taken to court — by a five-year-old plaintiff.

As you might imagine, there were proxies involved: Santa’s interests were represented by Santa’s Workshop, North Pole, N.Y. (in Wilmington), and young Michael of Saratoga Springs was spoken for by his parents. Attorneys handled the court proceedings on behalf of both parties.

An 18-Year-Old Essex County Missing Person Case

Hakan KaracayState Police continue to investigate an 18-year-old missing person case from Essex County.

On September 21, 1999, the Clifton Police Department in New Jersey received a report of a missing person.

Family members reported that Hakan Karacay, a 28-year-old immigrant from Turkey, left his residence on September 20, 1999, at approximately 5 pm, operating a silver 1989 Mazda 626. » Continue Reading.

Open Studio Tours and Adirondack Art Trails

My family likes to take part in art walks and gallery openings in and out of the Adirondack Park. We enjoy the arts and with a beautiful backdrop like the Adirondacks, what better place is there to explore art and nature?

This weekend area artists open their doors for the monthly Saranac Lake Artworks Studio Tours. With live demonstrations, artists create and showcase their original work while visitors take part in self-guided tours.  Each month the list of artists alters slightly. Essex County Arts & Crafts Festival August 1st

arts and crafts festivalOn Wednesday, August 1, this year’s second Essex County Arts & Crafts Festival will take place at the Essex County Fairgrounds in Westport from 10 am to 6 pm.

Nearly 40 local artists and crafters from 16 towns in Essex County and the neighboring region are expected to exhibit their hand-made creations of use and beauty.

Over 600 visitors attended the last Festival, according to organizers, who said they came from over 130 different zip codes across the country. » Continue Reading.
