Everyone loves a treasure hunt. And starting in June, Warren County-based First Wilderness Heritage Corridor has plans to bring you a county-wide treasure hunt that will take you to some of the coolest and most historic sites in Warren County!

The hunt will take the form of a growing hobby known as “letterboxing,” which incorporates orienteering, art and puzzle solving to find hidden treasures and complete a challenge. The goal is to find specified sites in the First Wilderness towns using clues in the form of a riddle.
Two kickoff events for the challenge will be held on Saturday, June 5th, one at The Kinnear Museum in Lake Luzerne and another at Martin’s Tree Farm and Sawmill in Thurman.
The new challenge was developed by Warren County Planning & Community Development, which oversees First Wilderness Heritage Corridor. The First Wilderness Heritage Corridor unites communities along the Upper Hudson River in celebrating their shared history along the earliest route into the heart of the Adirondack Mountains.
This new letterboxing challenge will help local residents learn more about the region’s unique characteristics and history while also having fun!

DEC gives tips for Green Giveaways

Everyone has something they have received for free from some sort of convention, fair, conference or event. Most of us let these free giveaways and trinkets pile up in drawers and desks until they are eventually thrown out.

When the world starts back up again and large-scale events with promotional giveaways start happening again, check out the DEC’s “Green Your Giveaways” PDF Guide to help plan better promotional items without unintentionally increasing your carbon footprint. The DEC recommends the following tips when purchasing the items that you need:

The (Plein Air) Show goes on

The annual Adirondack Plein Air Festival is on track for happening this summer, with a few changes.

Artists from all over the country have been registering for the Festival since Feb. 1, but with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic the registration was extended to June 1 to allow time to alter certain logistics.

For this year’s festival, artists will paint on their own anywhere within the Adirondack Park between the dates of July 30 and Aug. 19, and send in digital images of their completed work for an online art show that will be housed on Saranac Lake ArtWorks’ newly redesigned website for a month beginning Aug. 23. There will be no in-person reception or events as part of this year’s show.

Eating local during a pandemic? Adirondack Harvest says it can be done

Blue Pepper FarmAdirondack Harvest has added a COVID-19 resources page to its website, to make it easier to people to support area farms and businesses and continue to source locally produced foods. The page can be found here.

Here are a few highlights:

Delivery and pick-up options for local food and groceries.

Many regional CSA’s will begin soon. When you participate in a CSA, you will pay for a season’s worth of fresh food for a farmer, who will then coordinate pick-up or delivery to you weekly. To find a CSA near you, click here.

Farmstores are still open as well and taking care to keep their products available and safe for the public.  Browse regional farmstands and farmstores. Click here to view a map of regional farmstands and farmstores.

A list of Take-out and Delivery options has also been compiled by the Adirondack Almanack.

Many events and social gatherings have been canceled or postponed, but market organizers have updated protocol in some cases to provide a safer experience. The Saranac Lake Farmers’ Park-it is still open and offering curbside pick-up. You can order ahead online here.
