Call for entries: 47th Annual Tupper Lake Art Show

The Tupper Art Center  is currently closed for now due to the quarantine and it’s possible they may delay the opening of the following events or opt for a virtual format. Regardless, they are preparing for a number of events to be happening soon over the coming months:.

They are currently calling for artists for their 47th annual Tupper Lake Art Show, to take place at 106 Park St, Tupper Lake, on June 17 – July 11. Artists may submit up to 4 hanging works of art per individual, of any medium. Tables are available for 3 dimensional projects and floor space will be available for larger works of art. The drop-off is Saturday June 13 and Sunday June 14 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The reception is Wednesday, June 17, 6 to 8 p.m., and the pick-up will be  July 12-13. There will also be an Adirondacks Woodcrafts Show from July 14 – July 30, with the opening reception being on July 14 from 5 – 7 p.m. For more information you can contact info@tupperarts.org

VIEW Arts Center offers online exhibits and tutorials

Online Art ExhibitsView Center for Arts and Culture is currently closed to the public but will be adding pictures and videos of exhibits to their website in the coming days, in order to continue to showcase artists’ talent. Their first online exhibit will be “Captured in Acrylics: Paints by Tim Ames.”

If you are looking for something to do, View will also be offering online art tutorials in order to engage your creative mind while you are staying home for the foreseeable future. There will be multiple sets of tutorials released, each with different themes, requiring materials that are commonly found laying around the house. The first set of tutorials are paper themed. Wild Center Awarded Grant For Climate Change Education Space

Artists Sought for Wintry Mix Art of Ice and Snow Exhibit

Solstice by Diane E LeifheitView, the Center for Arts and Culture in Old Forge, is seeking artists to submit work that celebrates beautiful and magical winters in the Adirondacks for View’s upcoming Wintry Mix: Art of Ice and Snow exhibition.

Regional Artists Tackle Our Change Environment

Second World War and the Adirondacks Stories, Artifacts Sought

WW2 Uniform courtesy the Lanphear familyAdirondack Experience (ADKX), formerly the Adirondack Museum, is set to host a free open house event and community collecting day on November 11th, from 10 am to 4 pm, in support of the ADKX 2020 seasonal exhibition From Wilderness to Warfront: The Adirondacks and World War II.

This exhibition, planned to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, is devoted to the connections between Adirondack people and the global conflict. From regional industry and tourism to first-person accounts, the exhibition will explore diverse stories — those previously untold as well as those well-remembered — of regional mine workers, Mohawk code-talkers, Tuskegee airmen, and the countless local men and women who bravely served on the homefront or abroad during the world’s deadliest conflict. » Continue Reading.

Mary Woodcock Johnson Exhibit at NorthWind Fine Arts

Fox by Mary Woodcock Johnson A new exhibit, Mary Woodcock Johnson’s “Seasons,” is running through October 28, 2019 at NorthWind Fine Arts in Saranac Lake.

“Seasons” represents the artist’s return to oil painting while exploring winter, spring, summer and autumn as they unfold in the Adirondacks. The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, seasonal flowers, water lilies, and red foxes are four series represented in the show with a special nod to Adirondack spring. Warren Co Historical Society Opening New Museum Space

New Historic Saranac Lake Exhibit Celebrates the Arts

art of the cureHistoric Saranac Lake has announced an opening reception for “The Art of the Cure,” a new exhibit in the John Black Room of the Saranac Laboratory Museum, located 89 Church Street.

This exhibit highlights Saranac Lake’s rich history of the arts. The Trudeau Sanatorium and the Study and Craft Guild offered groundbreaking occupational therapy programs to tuberculosis patients, many of whom went on to become accomplished artists, writers, and craftspeople. » Continue Reading.

Prohibition Stories from the Adirondacks

I’m sure each corner of the Adirondacks has its own stories of bootleggers, moonshine, and the 18th Amendment prohibiting the production, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages.

Adirondack Almanack founder John Warren has one in his family. Families in little Beaver River over in Herkimer County, and in Hague and Witherbee have stories, as does about every family that remains from that time.

Each year Chestertown remembers the Prohibition Era with its Rum Runners Weekend and the 3rd Annual Wilmington Historical Society Whiskey Run on June 15th features a speakeasy.

As the centennial of the start of Prohibition approaches, the Adirondack History Museum in Elizabethtown is also showcasing Adirondack stories from the era. » Continue Reading.
