Historic Saranac Lake Seeks Roaring Twenties Artifacts

The Saranac Laboratory MuseumHistoric Saranac Lake is seeking the community’s help as the organization creates a new museum exhibit on the roaring twenties. The exhibit, titled, “A Grand Hotel” will feature artifacts of the 1920s. Historic Saranac Lake staff is hoping that community members will help by loaning artifacts for the exhibit.

“We are seeking items of clothing, jewelry, and other artifacts that are of the time period,” said Public Programs Coordinator Chessie Monks-Kelly. “We are particularly interested in items connected with local hotels of the 1920s.” » Continue Reading.

Ticonderoga: Herbal History Exhibit Opens Friday

herb gardenThe Ticonderoga Historical Society will open its second exhibit of the 2016 season on Friday, April 8 at 7 pm at the Hancock House.

“Herbal History of the Adirondacks” looks at how Native Americans and early settlers utilized native plants as medicinal and culinary preparations and how this has led to a contemporary herbal culture that continues to thrive today.

Noted local herbalist Nancy Scarzello is a co-designer of the exhibit and will speak at the opening. A Ticonderoga resident, Scarzello has more than 35 years of experience studying and teaching about herbs, native plants, natural healing and plant medicines. She is a regular presenter at the New England Women’s Herbal Conference. » Continue Reading.

New Exhibit On Adirondack Railroads

sr stoddard trainThe Chapman Historical Museum in Glens Falls has opened a new mini-exibit through June 1st, on Railroads in the Adirondacks. The new exhibit “The Railroads: Gateways to the Adirondacks” features seventeen Seneca Ray Stoddard photos taken from 1870 to 1890.

Photos include the Glens Falls and North Creek train stations, the trestle over the Sacandaga River, the D&H cut near Willsboro and the Prospect Mountain cable RR. On his travels Stoddard also photographed trains, including The Battery in New York City and the Green Mountain railway on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. » Continue Reading.

2016 Central Adirondack Art Show Seeks Entries

manhunt in the belly of the bestView, the multi-arts center located in Old Forge, has announced the call for entry for the 2016 Central Adirondack Art Show. Artwork can be dropped off at View from 10 am-4 pm on April 22nd, 23rd, 25th, or 26th.

The Central Adirondack Art show is a long-standing Old Forge tradition, showcasing some of the finest artists from the Central Adirondack Region and beyond. It was held for the first time in 1952 by View founder Miriam Kashiwa in her front yard. » Continue Reading.

Timbuctoo Exhibit Finds Permanent Home

timbuctooA landmark civil rights exhibit that has been seen by thousands of viewers across New York state is about to get a permanent home in Lake Placid.

The Dreaming of Timbuctoo exhibition will be installed this spring at the John Brown Farm State Historic Site, where visitors will have a chance to get an up-close look at a little-known period of Adirondack and African-American history when black and white abolitionists worked together to secure equal voting rights for black New Yorkers. » Continue Reading.

An Exhibition Celebrating Trees Seeks Artists

north by bob ericksonView, a multi-arts center located in Old Forge, has announced the call for entry for Branches, Brambles, and Roots: An Exhibition Celebrating Trees.

Trees provide shelter, building materials, shade, food, warmth, a place to sit or nest, a place to climb, play, and more. They have been celebrated, venerated, feared, worshipped, and cut down.

View is seeking artists for an all media, juried exhibition, that explores all aspects of trees in art, from raw material to inspiration and everything in between.

Chapman Museum Celebrates 50 Years

Portraits in the Wilderness Returns to Long Lake

Special Art Exhibit, Sale To Benefit Local Agencies

Robin & Anitra w Lacy painting_edited-1Robin and Anitra Pell were passionate collectors of local and regional artists from 19th century members of the Hudson River School such as Roswell Morse Shurtleff and Conrad Bozenhart (who often painted in Keene Valley) to such contemporary artists as painters Frank Owen and Paul Matthews, and photographer Nathan Farb.

As a means of raising funds for local cultural organizations, and ideally keeping the art in region, as per her wishes, the Estate of Anitra Pell will be exhibiting and offering for sale their collection of prints, drawings, painting, photographs and other works of art – nearly 100 pieces in all. » Continue Reading.

Contemporary Rustic at Giant Mountain Studio

Various media are represented including paintings, photography, pottery and rustic furniture.

Traditional rustic style emphasizes rugged, natural beauty. It embraces nature-inspired textures, simple and earthy colors, and ultimately an unpretentious, organic warmth. While rustic style in its most traditional sense might appear heavy and dark today, a contemporary rustic style has emerged over the past few years that feels both fresh and real, light and grounded. A Photography Shoot-Out In Paul Smiths

hartung_VICNightLightThere is a remarkable experiment on display in the gallery space of the Paul Smith’s College Visitors Interpretive Center (VIC). Twelve area photographers were invited to come out to the VIC between April 17 and 21 to capture images of the property. Then they had a couple of days to review their efforts, print, mat and frame them for this exhibit, which was hung on April 25.

The experiment was actually my idea. I absolutely love the challenges of plein air painting – hauling my paints and easel out to a view I like and spending a day creating a painting. I find it’s a wonderful way to totally immerse myself in that specific environment and put the rest of my life out of my mind for those enjoyable hours, not to mention the fresh air and (hopefully) sunshine. It’s like the difference between an impromptu talk and a rehearsed speech; you have to produce – right there – on the spot. » Continue Reading.

Select Works By Stephanie Berube In North Creek

MandelaStephanie Berube is a local artist, living in Thurman who studied art and art history at Hartwick College in Oneonta which happens to be near the Golden acrylic paint factory. Stephanie loves working with acrylic paints and as a student she took advantage of the Golden’s “Seconds Program” which offers paint that does not meet company standards at little or no cost to local artists.

While studying art, she became very excited about the ways in which new acrylics could be applied to her work. In particular Stephanie was fascinated with flow release, a concentrated surface-active liquid that allows her to control how the paint drips down the painting, pulling color along to create a look reminiscent of tie-dye. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Masterpieces At The Hyde Collection

“Wild Nature: Masterworks from the Adirondack Museum,” as the title signifies, is composed solely of works within the permanent collection of the Adirondack Museum.

For those who have never visited the museum in Blue Mountain Lake, “Wild Nature” is an introduction both to master works of American art depicting the landscape of the Adirondacks and to the museum itself, which is closed in the off-season. » Continue Reading.

TR, T-Rex, Art And More At Paul Smith’s VIC

bullard_barnumbrookStrikingly beautiful photographs, expressive but realistic paintings of dinosaurs in lush green landscapes, a “Touch Table”, live music Sunday afternoons from 1 – 3, and 25 miles of groomed ski trails….. this is the Paul Smith’s College VIC.

It’s really pretty cool to be able to come to a place that offers so much. The current New Moon Art Exhibit consists of photographs by Jim Bullard, of Potsdam, and paintings by Meg Bernstein of Saranac Lake, where she is a member of the Adirondack Artists Guild Gallery.
