Featured Trail: Moxham Mountain

Moxham Mountain is located in the Vanderwhacker Mountain Wild Forest. Moxham Mountain Trail (2,361 feet) extends 2.3 miles and ascends 1,000 feet from the trailhead to the summit of the mountain. The open summit provides views of the Hudson River Valley, Gore Mountain and the Central Adirondack.

The trail immediately begins to climb while diverging slowly away from Fourteenth Road. It is well marked after the first 50 feet by yellow DEC foot trail markers. It proceeds to climb to the top of a small ridge and after about 0.5 miles affords views across a valley to another local hill. It then follows the ridge south east and descends into the valley in order to skirt around the south-east end of the local hill just viewed. It crosses the outlet stream of a wetland, contours around the hill, crosses the inlet stream and ascends to the col between that hill and the extended ridge of Moxham Mountain. In the col, the trail bends left and ascends onto the lower portions of the Moxham ridge where at 1.3 miles there are a couple of open views of Gore Mountain to the south. » Continue Reading.

Featured Trails: Flume Trails in Wilmington

flume trail systemWilmington Flume Trail Network located in the Wilmington Wild Forest provides 11.5 miles of trails for snowshoeing and hiking. Those accessing these hiking trails from the Flume Trailhead West will pass a wildlife viewing area overlooking a beaver dam and pond and enjoy scenic views of the West Branch Ausable River.

Flume Knob can be reached on trails traversing at least 2.5 miles, depending on the route taken, and ascending 1,300 feet from the Flume West Trailhead. The peak can also be reached from the Bear Den Trailhead, from which the trail traverses a total of 1.5 miles and ascends approximately 1,025 feet. » Continue Reading.

Featured Trails: Ensign Pond Road Trailhead, North Hudson

hammond pond wild forestThere is a small parking area off Ensign Pond Road (County Route 4) that is the trailhead for Hammond Pond, Bass Lake, Berrymill Flow and Moose Mountain Pond in the Hammond Pond Wild Forest. All four trails are great for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Moose Mountain pond has a lean-to which may be accessed from the Berry Mill Flow Trailhead via the Berry Mill Flow Trail and the Moose Mountain Pond Trail. Moose Mountain Pond and Bass Lake are stocked with brook trout for fishing as well. » Continue Reading.

Featured Trail: Peaked Mountain, Thirteenth Lake

View from Peaked MountainPeaked Mountain, with an elevation of 2,919 feet, is a modest sized mountain located north-west of Thirteenth Lake in the Siamese Ponds Wilderness. Just before the creek (0.85 miles), the trail turns away from the lake and follows up the stream valley on a generally gentle grade. Part of the Champlain Area Trails, the trail system provides trails for snowshoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling in the winter and hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding in the other seasons. A lean-to provides outstanding views of the Giant Mountain Wilderness. There are several other viewing areas within the trail system that are quite rewarding.
