Students are invited to submit films before the April 10th deadline of the Beyond the Peaks Student Film Festival.
This event is designed to offer a red carpet showcase of student creativity and talent. All middle school and high school-aged students in the Adirondack region are eligible to enter films and win prizes. Community members are welcome to register to attend the festival as well, free of charge.
The Champlain Valley Film Series is set to present the documentary Free Solo, with special guest renowned climber, author and Adirondack guide Don Mellor in Whallonsburg, March 16th.

The Adirondack Film Society (AFS) has announced a re-brand of their premier film event, the Lake Placid Film Forum (LPFF), and will celebrate its nearly 20-year history with a gala tribute to the AFS-LPFF’s co-founder on October 25th.

The opera-themed film In the Mouth of the Wolf is set to be shown in Bolton Landing on Monday, June 25th, at 7:30 pm. This opening selection of the Sembrich Summer Film Series will be presented at Bolton Free Library, 4922 Lake Shore Drive, and is open free and open to the public.

The Adirondack Film Society (AFS) is moving the Lake Placid Film Forum from early June to late October. Through various meetings and the appointment of a new festival director, Gary Smith, the AFS board picked dates to follow three major film festivals.

The fall season of the Adirondack Film Society extends into December with a new documentary by Aaron Woolf, best known in the region as the former Democratic Party candidate for Congress who was defeated by Republican Elise Stefanik in 2014.
Outside the region, Woolf is known as a filmmaker, most notably for his documentary about agribusiness, King Corn (2007). His newest documentary is Denial, about gender transition, renewable energy and climate change. Denial follows Vermont electric utility CEO David Hallquist as his company struggles with generating and delivering electricity in the face of climate change. In the process, David Hallquist reveals to his family a lifelong dream to transition to Christine Hallquist. Hallquist’s son Derek directed the film with Woolf serving as one of the film’s producers, writers and co-creators. » Continue Reading.

TAUNY, Traditional Arts in Upstate New York, has invited the public to a presentation of Skydancer, a film about the Mohawk iron-workers who regularly commute from Akwesasne to New York City to work on the “high steel,” building the skyscrapers of Manhattan.
This 2011 film by Academy Award-nominated director Katja Esson follows iron-workers Jerry McDonald Thundercloud and Sky Fox as they shuttle between the hard drinking Brooklyn lodging houses they call home during the week and their family lives, a grueling drive six hours north back home to Akwesasne, NY, on the weekends. Through archival documents and interviews, it also explores the broader history of the Mohawk skywalkers, presenting the nuanced and visually stunning stories of these renowned men who, over six generations, have been traveling to New York City to work on some of the biggest construction jobs in the world. » Continue Reading.
The Adirondack Film Society will continue their “Easy Screening” Series presentations at the Strand movie house in Schroon Lake, on August 12-13, and August 19-20.
On Saturday and Sunday, August 12-13 the Easy Screening Series will feature a film screening of The Night We Met with a filmmaker Q&A. The Night We Met, was shot in Schroon Lake and received its world-premiere screenings at the Strand in August 2016.
Albany-area-based, husband-and-wife filmmaking team of Jon Russell Cring, the movie’s director and co-writer, and Tracy Nichole Cring, its other co-writer, director of photography, and editor, will be on hand to introduce the film and take questions following the screening. » Continue Reading.
The Adirondack History Museum will present a special screening of “Colvin: Hero of the North Woods” on Thursday, July 6 at 7 pm. Film director Bill Killon will be on hand to introduce his new 45-minute documentary.
The film tells the story of Verplanck Colvin, who explored, surveyed and mapped the northern reaches of Upstate New York from 1872 to 1900. To protect the forest and watersheds, at a time when the idea of conservation was in its infancy, he proposed a state park for the Adirondack region of New York. » Continue Reading.
The Sembrich summer film series will begin on Monday, June 26th at 7:30 pm at the Bolton Free Library with the North Country premiere of Afterimage, the final film by Polish director Andrzej Wajda, who passed away in 2016 at age 90. The screening is free and open to the public.
Afterimage will be introduced by Radka Franczak, a film-maker in her own right who studied at the Wadja School in Poland under the mentorship of Wajda.
In addition to introducing the Wajda film, Franczak will present a brief preview of her own work-in-progress, a film documentary on the life of Marcella Sembrich entitled Lost Voice. » Continue Reading.
The 16th Lake Placid Film Forum takes place this week, bringing a blend of international films, screenings, workshops, and master class programs to the Olympic village. According to the Adirondack Film Society’s Operations Manager Fred Balzac, the June 7-11, 2017 event will kick off with a thank you to Lake Placid.
“We are presenting a free screening of the film ‘Eddie the Eagle’ on Wednesday,” says Balzac. “Eddie trained in Lake Placid and we want to celebrate the town’s Olympic roots. We have Larry Stone, a ski jumping coach, as a special guest. This free screening is supported by the town and village of Lake Placid.”
Around the year 2000, The Lake Placid Film Forum went through a restructuring phase with the loss of corporate funding and the nature of the economy. The organizing committee revamped the event into a monthly film series. Due to popular demand, the Film Forum was added back into the schedule and has been growing ever since. » Continue Reading.
