Two teens run out of daylight on McKenzie Mountain Trail

New eBikes: Forest Rangers are using two new electric bicycles in DEC’s Region 5 to minimize the use of motor vehicles in some campgrounds and reduce DEC’s carbon footprint. The e-bikes have an 80-mile range when fully charged and will be used for routine patrol, law enforcement, and search and rescue missions. To learn more, visit the DEC Facebook page.

Submerged, empty car found near Ensign Pond Road

Car Submerged:
 On Nov. 21 at 9:40 p.m., the North Hudson Fire Department reported a traffic accident that resulted in a car submerged in the water near Ensign Pond Road. At 10 p.m., Ranger Quinn responded to the potential water rescue, but determined the car was empty. New York State Police located the driver in Moriah and are handling the investigation.

Lost 80-year-old hunter found following overnight, multi-agency search

Wilderness Search:
 On Nov. 17 at 7:25 p.m., Ray Brook Dispatch received a call about two overdue hikers hiking Mount Marcy. The pair from Brewster had proper clothing and headlamps and texted friends at 4:42 p.m. to advise they were on their way down the trail. At 9:02 p.m., Ranger Lewis made voice contact with the hikers and located them a short time later near an old ski trail. One of the subjects had severe leg cramps. Ranger Duchene hiked in with extra water for the pair. Rangers helped the hikers back to Adirondak Loj at 10:20 p.m.

Missing man found dead in Titusville State Forest

Wilderness Recovery:
 On Nov. 11 at 12:50 p.m., Forest Rangers Adams and Odell located an ATV on Titusville State Forest that was connected to a missing vulnerable adult case investigated by New York State Police (NYSP) in Malone. Over the next two days, 15 Rangers and 10 volunteers with Search and Rescue of the Northern Adirondacks supported the NYSP-led search effort, which included deployment of helicopters and drones in a 12-linear-mile search area. On Nov. 12, NYSP Pilot Kotronis and Ranger Lewis spotted a used fire ring along a streambed. On Nov. 13, Rangers Foutch and Milano paddled the Hatch Brook, saw the fire ring, and at 10:50 a.m., located the 59-year-old subject deceased. Rangers transported the subject to the road via canoe and turned him over to the coroner. Resources were clear at 5 p.m.

Rangers respond to Vienna fire, wet & cold Long Lake camper

Wilderness Rescue:
 On Nov. 2, at 9:25 p.m., Ranger Milano responded to the Cedarlands Conservation Easement Tract to help extract a camper who reported they were wet, cold, and unable to start a fire. Ranger Milano assisted the camper out of the woods, where they declined medical attention. Resources were clear at 11:10 p.m.

Lost and disoriented Piercefield hunter, Rock River Trail hiker found

 On Oct. 25 at 2:56 p.m., Forest Ranger Scott responded to a call for a missing hiker. The 54-year-old from Pennfield made a wrong turn on the Rock River Trail. Ranger Scott located the subject at Benton Road and helped her back to her vehicle at the trailhead. Resources were clear by 4 p.m.

Lost hunters found following overnight searches in Stony Creek & the Pepperbox Wilderness

Wilderness Rescue:
 On Oct. 17 at 1:10 p.m., Ray Brook Dispatch received a call about a hiker with a possible broken ankle near Chapel Pond. Five Forest Rangers responded. The first Rangers reached the 60-year-old from the state of Florida at 1:48 p.m. Rangers splinted the subject’s ankle and helped him back to the trailhead. The subject declined further medical care. Resources were clear at 2:18 p.m.

Twelve hikers lose trail on Owls Head Mountain, three hikers stranded at Indian Falls

Wilderness Rescue:
On Oct. 4 at 8:08 p.m., Ray Brook Dispatch received a call about a beacon device activated to communicate a diabetic emergency. The 35-year-old from Minnesota self-administered insulin, but could not test his blood sugar. At 11 p.m., Forest Rangers and a Wilmington/Keene Valley Paramedic reached the subject between Basin Mountain and Little Haystack. Rescuers helped the subject and their hiking partner back to their vehicles. When they arrived at 12:20 a.m., the patient’s blood sugar was back to a normal level.

Aircraft crash on Lake Placid airport runway leaves two dead

 On Sept. 27 at 3:15 p.m., Ray Brook Dispatch received a call about a hiker who fell near the junction of Wright and Algonquin peaks. Forest Rangers DuChene and Lewis hiked to the 65-year-old from Cropseyville, splinted his wrist, and helped him back to the trailhead. Lake Placid Ambulance took the hiker to the hospital at 6:52 p.m.

Hiker air lifted from Mt. Marcy following leg injury

Wilderness Rescue:
On Sept. 20 at 2:35 p.m., Ray Brook Dispatch alerted Forest Rangers to a hiker with an unstable leg injury on Mount Marcy. The 53-year-old from New Jersey was approximately half a mile from the summit, just below the tree line. New York State Police (NYSP) Aviation was called to assist. With Ranger Baldwin as the crew chief, NYSP Pilot Beck flew Ranger Corey to the scene. Ranger Baldwin lowered Ranger Corey to the patient.

Man flees hospital, swims across Lake Colby to evade authorities

Law Enforcement:
 On Sept. 6 at 5:45 p.m., Forest Ranger Russell observed a vehicle swerving over the center divider of State Route 11B. Ranger Russell pulled over the driver. When the driver opened the glove compartment, Ranger Russell saw evidence that there may have been a handgun in the vehicle. The driver admitted to having a 9mm handgun in his luggage. Ranger Russell called Ray Brook Dispatch to request New York State Police (NYSP) assistance.

Body recovered from Schroon River, 15 Hudson Gorge rafters rescued via railbikes

Wilderness Search:
 On Aug. 27 at 9:50 p.m., Fish Creek Campground caretakers called Ray Brook Dispatch to report two overdue campers who were not equipped with headlamps, food, or water. Forest Rangers Curcio and O’Connor searched the Otter Hollow trail from Square Pond. A campground employee flagged down the Rangers to report they heard voices on the other side of Whey Pond.

Ranger O’Connor located a 32-year-old and 13-year-old from Kingston. The 13-year-old was in a tree along the northern shore of Rollins Pond. Rangers walked the pair back to the campground, arriving at 1:15 a.m.

Wanted Gloversville fugitive found camping near Chubb Lake

Fugitive Search:
For the last five months, Forest Ranger Lieutenant Kerr and Rangers Hamm, Nally, and Thompson assisted the U.S. Marshals Service in the search for a wanted fugitive from Gloversville. The 35-year-old had been living in the woods on state land with minimal outside contact. On August 22 while on patrol, Rangers Hamm and Thompson spotted the subject camping near Chubb Lake.

Rangers locate 3 hikers lost on Dix Range, hundreds attend funeral of Colonel David Cornell

Wilderness Search:
 On Aug 16 at 8:50 a.m., nine Forest Rangers responded to a call for three missing hikers on the Dix Range who were supposed to meet the rest of their hiking party the night before at the Slide Brook lean-to. The teenagers from Troy, West Sand Lake, and Wynantskill were well-trained hikers with headlamps, food, water, a map, and a compass.
