Celebrating fresh water

Happy World Water Day (on March 22). This United Nations observance day was established in 1993 to celebrate water and raise awareness of the 2 billion people across the world living without access to safe drinking water. This year’s theme is a focus on groundwater: “Making the invisible visible.”

The world relies almost entirely on groundwater for drinking water supplies, sanitation systems, farming and other uses, according to the UN. The recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report emphasized concerns about the future of drinking water as warming trends and human development accelerate threats to water supplies.

Adirondack Water Week 2020

Join the Adirondack Watershed Institute in celebrating Water Week throughout the Adirondacks Sunday, Aug. 23 through Friday, Aug. 28.

Freshwater is one of the Adirondack’s most precious resources, and Water Week is your opportunity to discover ways to be proactive in protecting our waterways. This year’s event will be focusing on the Legacy of Adirondack Waters, and will feature a weeklong speaker series, as well as an Aquatic Invasive Species Spread Prevention Certification Training Program.

The Adirondack Almanack

The Adirondack Almanack is a public forum dedicated to promoting and discussing current events, history, arts, nature and outdoor recreation and other topics of interest to the Adirondacks and its communities

We publish commentary and opinion pieces from voluntary contributors, as well as news updates and event notices from area organizations. Contributors include veteran local writers, historians, naturalists, and outdoor enthusiasts from around the Adirondack region.
