Grants Available for Invasive Species Projects

DEC logoNew York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that $3 million is available in the first round of the State’s newly consolidated Invasive Species Grant Program.

To support projects that target both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species across the state, DEC combined previous funding opportunities, including the Aquatic Invasive Species Spread Prevention and the Aquatic and Terrestrial Invasive Species Early Detection/Rapid Response grants, into a single grant program. Adirondack AstroScience Center Awarded Grants

Rendering of planned AstroScience CenterThe Adirondack Sky Center (a.k.a. the Adirondack Public Observatory) has been awarded three grants to support planned AstroScience Center museum and planetarium construction and education programs.

Situated on four acres of raised land in the northerly area of Tupper Lake, the Adirondack Sky Center benefits from some of the darkest and most pristine skies east of the Mississippi River. Interest from across the northeast as well as the local community has spurred the establishment of a permanent Adirondack center for astronomy and space science, the AstroScience Center. Complementing the Wild Center natural history museum, the Adirondack Sky Center is expected to help expand science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning in the region, while also strengthening the the Adirondacks as a travel destination. » Continue Reading.

Pearsall Foundation Awards 34 Grants

Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack FoundationThe trustees of the Glenn and Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation rotate the site of their Annual Meeting and Board Retreat around the Adirondack Park and this year it was held at Schroon Lake. The trustees met with 17 Schroon Lake area not-for-profits, organized by Roger Friedman, to discuss issues in the community and how the Pearsall Foundation might help.

2018 Cycle Adirondacks Community Projects Funded

cycle adirondacksCycle Adirondacks, in partnership with Adirondack Foundation and the Cloudsplitter Foundation, have donated over $5,000 to community generated projects in Speculator, Inlet and North Creek as part of its CycleADK Gives program.

The three communities served as overnight hosts for CycleADK’s 2018 Ultimate Cycling Vacation, which drew over 230 cyclists from across the United States and Canada to the Adirondacks from August 18-24 for a week-long bicycle tour. » Continue Reading.

$150k Supporting Staff Training at Adirondack Experience

adirondack experience workshopAdirondack Experience, The Museum on Blue Mountain Lake (ADKX), has received a $156,573 grant from the Museums for America program of Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a federal agency.

This year, IMLS received 472 funding requests from across the U.S. and made grants to only 28% of the applicants. In recent years ADKX has received a total of $694,837 in IMLS funding, including the new award. Past funding has supported the installation of new exhibitions, the conservation of ADKX’s unique collections, and other projects. » Continue Reading.
