Grants for Mental Illness Stigma Reduction Projects

The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) has announced the availability of up to $75,000 in grant funding for projects that help reduce the stigma often associated with mental illness.

This funding represents the revenues received through a voluntary tax check-off program launched in 2016. This program allows taxpayers to contribute easily to the ‘Mental Illness Anti-Stigma Fund’ when filing their NYS taxes.

The Office of Mental Health will provide 15 grants of up to $5,000 each to support year-long stigma-reduction projects. Agencies must have at least one year of experience serving individuals with mental illness in order to qualify. » Continue Reading.

Grant Funding For Mohawk River Watershed Projects

Mohawk River Watershed and Adirondack Park The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that approximately $200,000 in grant funding is available to municipalities and not-for-profit organizations to implement the Mohawk River Basin Action Agenda. The funding is provided by the state’s Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) and administered under DEC’s Mohawk River Watershed Grants Program.

To be eligible for this funding opportunity, proposed projects must be located within the Mohawk River watershed (which includes portions of the Adirondack Park in the towns of Russia, Norway, Salisbury, Stratford, Caroga, Bleecker, Arietta, Morehouse and Ohio), as well as further the objectives of the Mohawk River Basin Action Agenda.

Climate Resiliency Planning Grants Available

The NYS Department of State (DOS) is seeking applications for the Countywide Resiliency Planning Grant Program. This is a competitive funding program for the development of Countywide Resiliency Plans that primarily address climate change risks and vulnerabilities associated with: an increase in frequency and severity of storm and precipitation events; sea-level rise; storm surge; and flooding. The Countywide Resiliency Planning Grant Program is available to upstate counties in New York that were not previously covered by the NY Rising Community Reconstruction Program. » Continue Reading.

Upper Hudson Recreation Hub Microenterprise Grants

The Essex County Industrial Development Agency was awarded an Adirondack Park Upper Hudson Recreation Hub Grant last year for a second round of the successful Hub Microenterprise Program.

A public information meeting for potential applicants will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 pm at the Long Lake Town Hall.

The total amount awarded for this program, a partnership with Essex and Hamilton counties, is approximately $500,000. The funds were provided by the Nature Conservancy to strengthen links between communities and conservation lands. » Continue Reading.

Funding Opportunities for Climate Smart Communities

The New York State (NYS) Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced nine different sources of financial support for a variety of climate, energy, and sustainability initiatives.

DEC Electronic Waste Assistance Grants – $1.8 million

Applications Accepted between January through 31, 2017
Eligible Entities: all municipalities within New York State (“Municipality” means a local public authority or public benefit corporation, a county, city, town, village, or Indian tribe or nation residing within New York state, or any combination thereof, or a school district or supervisory district.)
DEC announced that a second round of grant funding from the Environmental Protection Fund (EPF) is being made available to help municipalities across the state address costs associated with the collection and recycling of eligible electronic wastes (e-waste). Municipalities may receive reimbursement of up to 50 percent of eligible expenses incurred for recycling of e-waste between April 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017. Traveling Cure Porch Mobile Exhibition Space Planned

Feisthamel-Edelberg Cure Cottage Photo Courtesy Historic Saranac Lake.The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded an Art Works grant of $20,000 to Historic Saranac Lake for design of the Traveling Cure Porch, a mobile exhibition space that will host community-based history and arts programs.

Cure porches are ubiquitous in Saranac Lake, where tens of thousands of people came from around the world for the “fresh air cure” for tuberculosis. Hundreds of local homes that catered to patients feature these glass-enclosed porches with movable windows.

Historic Saranac Lake’s focus of the first phase of the Traveling Cure Porch Project is to design a sturdy, low cost, mobile space and plan for its construction and use in 2018. HSL is working with Jesse Schwartzberg of Black Mountain Design Build, to create a design.

$3M in Environmental Justice Community Grants Awarded

DEC LogoNew York State has issued $3 million in Environmental Justice Community Impact Grants to mitigate environmental and public health threats in low-income and minority communities. This funding was included in the expanded Environmental Protection Fund, part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Environmental Justice initiative, in this year’s State Budget. More than $3 million is expected to be distributed to communities around the state.

The Community Impact Grants are administered through the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Office of Environmental Justice. DEC officials say that since the program’s launch in 2006 the Department has distributed more than $4 million for 121 Environmental Justice projects statewide. » Continue Reading.

LCBP Issues $490,000 RFP to Reduce Lake Champlain Pollution

lake champlain basin programThe Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) has announced a Request for Proposals for services to support planning and implementation of best management practices to reduce pollution within the Lake Champlain watershed.

Up to $490,000 is available to support these grants. Implementation projects to install best management practices will range from $50,000-$125,000, while project planning grants such as municipal green infrastructure or combined sewer reduction strategies will be funded up to $50,000. » Continue Reading.

Grants Offered to Connect Schools, State Parks, Historic Sites

New York State ParksThe New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) has announced state grants to public schools throughout New York State to fund field trips to state parks and historic sites for environmental, history and physical education programming.

Funding for the $500,000 Connect Kids to Parks Transportation Grant program comes from the state Environmental Protection Fund’s enhanced Environmental Justice programming approved in the 2016-17 State Budget.  The grant is available to Kindergarten-12th grade classes in Title 1 public schools. » Continue Reading.

Lake Champlain Basin Program Seeks Grant Proposals

lake champlain basin programThe Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) is seeking proposals for local grants to support the implementation of the long-term management plan for Lake Champlain Opportunities for Action.

The LCBP anticipates awarding more than 50 grants totaling more than $750,000 dollars. U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont was instrumental in securing funding for these awards, which originates from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Great Lakes Fishery Commission through agreements with the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission. » Continue Reading.
