CanAm Pond Hockey Weekend in Lake Placid

The recent cold snap made plenty of ice around the Adirondacks and there is no better place to lace up the skates than at the annual CanAm Pond Hockey tournament in Lake Placid, with its more than 20 rinks cleared across Mirror Lake.

A pond hockey game brings back the simplicity of the winter sport and no better place resonates with fans of the game like the hometown of the 1980 Miracle on Ice. The CanAm Hockey Tournament celebrates the spirit of hockey this weekend January 25-27, 2019 with age divisions as well as women’s open and co-ed open divisions.

This annual pond hockey tournament is only open to adults, but spectators of all ages can have fun watching the games. With the addition of a plowed skating loop, spectators can walk or skate around the rinks to see the action up close and personal.

Paul Smith’s College Hires Head Hockey Coach

Paul Smiths BobcatsCasey Gerrish, an experienced hockey player, referee and area league commissioner, has been brought on as head hockey coach at Paul Smith’s College.

Gerrish has played at the Junior A level in the US, as well as Juniors in Canada, and has assisted in coaching since he was 16. He also brings 21 years of refereeing experience and three more as commissioner for the Northern Adult Hockey League, the top non-professional league in northern New York. » Continue Reading.

Miracle on Ice Fantasy CampFifteen of the 19 remaining 1980 USA Hockey Team players will be back in Lake Placid, Sunday through Wednesday, March 25-28, to participate in the fourth annual Miracle on Ice Fantasy Camp.

1980 Lake Placid Olympics Scoreboard Being Replaced

The scoreboard that chronicled historical moments and the United States’ improbable run to the 1980 Olympic Winter Games gold medal will be lit one more time on February 6th at 1 pm, before being taken down to make way for a new Daktronics video board.

The scoreboard has hung high from the center ice rafters of the Olympic 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid for the last 37 years.  In addition to its duties during the 1980 Olympics, the scoreboard has registered NHL, minor, junior, collegiate, high school and tournament scores. » Continue Reading.

Hockeyfest, Snow Sculpting Championship Getting Underway

Can Am Adult Pond HockeyHelicopter rides, ice bowling, snow sculpting and pond hockey will highlight the first Hockeyfest Weekend from January 26 to 29 in Lake Placid, coinciding with the New York State 2017 Snow Sculpting Championship, which began Tuesday.

Hockeyfest has been introduced as a way to enhance the annual CAN/AM Adult Pond Hockey tournament that occurs on a series of groomed rinks lined up on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid each year.

The action on Mirror Lake will include helicopter rides on Friday and Saturday, and family-friendly pickup games of broomball, ice bowling, Shinny and public skating on the lake loop ice track, along with public skating at the speed skating oval throughout the weekend. » Continue Reading.

CanAm Pond Hockey On Mirror Lake This Weekend

IMG_0020A pond hockey game brings back the simplicity of winter sport and what better place to enjoy one than the home of the 1980 “Miracle on Ice.”

For the 11th year, the CanAm Hockey Tournament has come to Lake Placid to celebrate the spirit of hockey under the backdrop of the Adirondack High Peaks. Currently 74 teams are waiting to take to the 20 ice rinks on Mirror Lake this weekend, January 28-31, 2016.

‘Miracle on Ice’ Anniversary Event Planned

Sports_Illustrated_Miracle_on_Ice_coverThe gold medal winning 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, who achieved what Sports Illustrated proclaimed, “the greatest sports moment of the 20th century” with their “Miracle on Ice” victory over the Soviet Union, will participate in a special event using video, audio and photos to relive the game, through their perspective, in Lake Placid. Todd Walsh, who has worked with FOX Sports Arizona since 2001 and works with the Phoenix Coyotes and Arizona Diamondbacks, will narrate.

The1980 Rink- Herb Brooks Arena will open its doors to fans on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at 7:30 pm for an exclusive event with the players.  This February marks the 35th anniversary of their historic achievement. » Continue Reading.

Lake Placid Film Forum Series Continues with ‘Red Army’

Directed by Gabe Polsky, “Red Army” goes behind the Iron Curtain and tracks the Soviet Union’s hockey team domination to its unraveling at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympic Games to its ultimate demise.

Executive Producers Werner Herzog and Jerry Weintraub helped bring Polsky’s vision to life in this documentary that has received rave reviews from the Cannes, New York, Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals. In “Red Army,” Polsky tracks the Russian hockey dynasty through the eyes of its captain Slava Fetisov. The film reveals how Fetisov fell from the pedestal of Russian national hero to national enemy during the Cold War when hockey wasn’t just a game, but political propaganda and its players were pawns. » Continue Reading.
