Department of Environmental Conservation Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Jennifer Okonuk reported that on September 21, she encountered several migratory bird hunters in Northern Franklin County during the early goose and youth waterfowl hunting seasons.
ECO Okonuk said one group of hunters from Maine was guided by a licensed guide outfitter, but three of the hunters failed to have their required New York Harvest Information Program (HIP) number. The licensed guide also failed to possess a valid hunting license, she said. None of the hunters had their guns plugged as required, and the guns were all capable of holding more than three shells according to ECO Okonuk. » Continue Reading.
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that several small game hunting seasons will open on October 1st across New York State.
Several special youth-only hunting seasons for pheasants and waterfowl occur prior to the start of the regular season, and youth hunting programs are scheduled in DEC’s Region 6, which includes portions of the Adirondack Park.
The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County has announced an Outdoor Education Day, set for Sunday, September 15th from 1 to 3 pm at 377 Schroon River Road in Warrensburg.

Black bear hunting seasons open this weekend in the southeastern part of the state and next weekend in the North Country.
In northern New York, the early bear season runs from Sept. 14 to Oct. 18 in WMUs 5A, 5C, 5F, 5G, 5H, 5J, 6C, 6F, 6H, and 6J. Bowhunting season for bears also begins on Sept. 14, in the other Northern Zone units (WMUs 6A, 6G, 6K, and 6N). Muzzleloader season then opens in all northern WMUs on Oct. 19, followed by the regular firearms season for bears on Oct. 26.

Hunters in New York killed an estimated 227,787 deer during the 2018-19 hunting seasons, approximately 12 percent more than the previous season, State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced.
The estimated deer take included 114,402 antlerless deer and 113,385 antlered bucks. Statewide, this represents a 20-percent increase in antlerless deer and a five-percent increase in bucks from the last season. » Continue Reading.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that New York State white-tailed deer hunters have been reporting more success in 2018 than last year through the end of the regular big game season.
Through December 16, hunters reported taking approximately 14 percent more deer in the Northern Zone and 11 percent more deer in the Southern Zone, compared to the same period in 2017. Reports from the Southern Zone and Northern Zone are up more than 26 percent and 33 percent from 2016 numbers, respectively, indicating an increase in harvest over the past three hunting seasons. » Continue Reading.
New York State Environmental Conservation Officer Ben Tabor reported that on November 30, several complainants called about a buck suspected of being taken over bait in the town of Ohio that had been entered in a local big buck contest.
Tabor said he determined where the deer had been shot after finding a large bait pile with the gut pile next to it and interviewed the suspect, who admitted to taking the buck illegally. » Continue Reading.
DEC Environmental Conservation Officer (ECO) Maxwell Nocols has reported that on November 21st he received a report of hunters trespassing, firing two shots and killing an antlerless deer on private property in the town of Schroon.
ECO Nicols said he arrived to find numerous footprints entering the woods off Letsonville Road and crossing two separate posted properties. ECO Matt Lacroix with K-9 Diesel were contacted to assist with the investigation. » Continue Reading.
