Rangers Make Rescue at Pilot Knob Preserve, Lake George

Lake George Rev War Remains: The 1st Pennsylvania At Fort George

archaeologists and assistants examine excavated soils at the siteThe remains dislodged from an 18th century military cemetery at a Lake George construction site will, in all likelihood, be reinterred on the grounds of Fort George Park, say Village officials.

The Village’s Board of Trustees has adopted a resolution calling upon New York State to permit the remains to be buried at the state-owned park, said Mayor Bob Blais.

Blais said New York State officials support the proposal, although the remains will be in the possession of state archaeologists for at least a year, undergoing examination and analyses. » Continue Reading.

Annual Hike-A-Thon Sees Surge in Early Registrations

2018 hike a thonEarly-bird registrations for the Lake George Land Conservancy’s (LGLC) Hike-A-Thon have set new records for the event organizers say. Now in its 7th year, the online registration form went live March 4; just 24 hours later, 363 people had registered, filling up five of the 17 available sites. One week later, the registration total reached 450.

With an expected attendance of more 600 hikers, paddlers and volunteers, the Lake George Hike-A-Thon continues to be the LGLC’s largest event. Always scheduled for July 5th, the event has rotated through the days of the week; this year the 5th lands on a Friday, which may be one reason for the huge response. » Continue Reading.

Hammond Pond Wild Forest Changes Highlight APA Agenda

APA Building in Ray Brook NYThe Adirondack Park Agency will hold its monthly meeting at its headquarters in Ray Brook on Thursday, March 14th and Friday March 15th, 2019. Thursday’s meeting will begin at 1 pm and Friday’s session will commence at 9:30 am.

The meeting will feature a presentation on final draft of the Hammond Pond Wild Forest Unit Management Plan and consideration of a public comment period regarding conformance of the plan to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan. Also a presentation on road salt reduction initiatives around Lake George is on the agenda, and more.

Featured Trail: Sleeping Beauty Mountain, Lake George

sleeping beauty trailSleeping Beauty Mountain, part of the Lake George Wild Forest, is located on the east side of Lake George and is a moderate hike with a few steeper switchbacks. The trail ascends 1,038 feet and 2.1 miles from the Dacy Clearing Parking Area to the summit at 2,347 feet.

From the parking area, follow the trail about half a mile to the first intersection, then turn right and continue the rest of the way to the summit. Hikers will encounter the false summit first which provides stunning views of the lake and surrounding mountains. The wooded summit is approximately a half mile further from the false summit. » Continue Reading.

Waterkeeper Chris Navitsky Wins Statewide Award

Lake George Waterkeeper Chris Navitsky has been selected as the recipient of a statewide award for his work using the study of algae near the shore of the Lake to identify and prioritize potential sources of pollutants.

Navitsky will be formally presented with the Linn H. Enslow Memorial Award from the non-profit New York Water Environment Association (NYWEA), a statewide organization of leaders in water quality management, at the Association’s annual meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in New York City. » Continue Reading.

Fort William Henry Corp Under New Leadership

Fort William Henry Hotel The Board of Directors of Fort William Henry Corporation has announced the election of Kathryn Flacke Muncil, Sebastian J. Luciano, and Nancy Flacke Reuss to a new executive leadership team.

The first Fort William Henry Hotel opened in 1855. The resort, one of the oldest and largest on Lake George, now includes the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center, the Best Western Hotel at Exit 21 and the recreated Fort William Henry, site of a pivotal 1757 French and Indian War battle.

Out of the Closet: Adirondack Ugly Sweater Events

Even thoughtful gifts don’t always exactly fit your taste. Give that ugly sweater a chance to redeem itself (and the sweater giver) by wearing it an Adirondack ugly sweater events. Just like that bridesmaid dress we are always told can be repurposed, that festive holiday sweater can now raise funds for children’s art classes, food pantries, or even a pint of beer. Good luck.

On December 8, BluSeed Studios will host an Ugly Sweater 5K Run/Walk to help fund their annual free spring break and after school art classes for area children. Each participant will receive a raffle ticket for artisan items. Registration and the race begins at their Cedar Street location in Saranac Lake, and continues around Moody Pond to end back at BluSeed Studio for hot beverages and muffins. Admission is $20 for adults (which includes a commemorative artisan tile/trivet), $5 for students and leashed dogs, while children in strollers are free. You can register the morning of the event beginning at 8:30 am for a 9 am start. Prizes are awarded for top three male and female as well as the ugliest sweater. » Continue Reading.
