The Adirondack Film Society (AFS) has announced a re-brand of their premier film event, the Lake Placid Film Forum (LPFF), and will celebrate its nearly 20-year history with a gala tribute to the AFS-LPFF’s co-founder on October 25th.

The Adirondack Film Society (AFS) is moving the Lake Placid Film Forum from early June to late October. Through various meetings and the appointment of a new festival director, Gary Smith, the AFS board picked dates to follow three major film festivals.

The 16th Lake Placid Film Forum takes place this week, bringing a blend of international films, screenings, workshops, and master class programs to the Olympic village. According to the Adirondack Film Society’s Operations Manager Fred Balzac, the June 7-11, 2017 event will kick off with a thank you to Lake Placid.
“We are presenting a free screening of the film ‘Eddie the Eagle’ on Wednesday,” says Balzac. “Eddie trained in Lake Placid and we want to celebrate the town’s Olympic roots. We have Larry Stone, a ski jumping coach, as a special guest. This free screening is supported by the town and village of Lake Placid.”
Around the year 2000, The Lake Placid Film Forum went through a restructuring phase with the loss of corporate funding and the nature of the economy. The Lake Placid Film Forum – now marking its fifteenth anniversary – returns to The Lake Placid Center for the Arts (LPCA) and the Palace Theatre with a lineup of new, recent and classic film screenings from Thursday, June 9, through Sunday, June 12. Tickets are $10 per screening and will be available at the LPCA Box Office.
The boxing classic “Rocky” will open the five-day event with a free outdoor screening in Mid’s Park in downtown Lake Placid Wednesday, June 8, at approximately 9 pm. » Continue Reading.
It is poignant that the Adirondack Film Society and Lake Placid Film Forum have chosen “Red Army” as part of its inaugural monthly film series. Directed by Gabe Polsky, “Red Army” goes behind the Iron Curtain and tracks the Soviet Union’s hockey team domination to its unraveling at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympic Games to its ultimate demise.
Executive Producers Werner Herzog and Jerry Weintraub helped bring Polsky’s vision to life in this documentary that has received rave reviews from the Cannes, New York, Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals. In “Red Army,” Polsky tracks the Russian hockey dynasty through the eyes of its captain Slava Fetisov. The film reveals how Fetisov fell from the pedestal of Russian national hero to national enemy during the Cold War when hockey wasn’t just a game, but political propaganda and its players were pawns. » Continue Reading.
