Lake Placid, NY —Professional and volunteer trail crews organized by ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) are returning to Mt Jo this summer to continue building a new sustainable trail to the summit.
Serving over 15,000 hikers a year, Mt. Jo is an iconic mountain in North Elba that is often visited by first-time outdoor recreators and used as a classroom for ADK’s fourth grade school outreach program. After assessment, it was determined in 2020 that one of the two approaches to the summit—the Long Trail—had exceeded standards for sustainability and safety.
In response, ADK determined a new route, rallied support from donors and volunteers, and broke ground on the trail in 2021. Last November, the Town of North Elba backed the project by awarding ADK a $50,000 grant from the Local Enhancement & Advancement Fund (LEAF) to improve accessibility on the trail.
Lake Placid, NY — The Adirondack High Peaks Summit Stewardship Program has started its 33rd season of protecting New York’s alpine ecosystem. Summit stewards will be educating hikers on high peaks summits—namely Marcy, Algonquin, Wright, and Cascade—through Indigenous People’s Day. During this time, they will also be focused on expanding the program’s photopoint monitoring, which is key to showcasing the link between educational outreach and alpine vegetation recovery.
“We are excited to continue the important work of protecting New York’s alpine ecosystem,” said Kayla White, ADK Stewardship Manager. “The Summit Stewardship Program has been and continues to be one of the best examples we have of an outreach effort that has successfully shown people how to protect sensitive ecosystems while they enjoy them.”
Since the program’s founding in 1989, summit stewards have educated over 600,000 hikers about alpine vegetation and how to protect it. The result has been a remarkable recovery in vegetation on alpine-carrying summits in the High Peaks region, a trend that has held despite increases in visitor use over the last decade.
The Town of North Elba, the Village of Lake Placid and the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) have collaborated to develop a destination management plan. This plan will guide efforts of local government, tourism organizations, environmental agencies, economic development initiatives, community organizations, residents and other organizations within the area. Its purpose is to establish regional priorities and guide efforts to balance community, resident and business needs, while enhancing the visitor experience.
Local leaders will be meeting this week to begin discussions regarding implementation of the plan. “This plan offers a guide,” says Derek Doty, Town of North Elba supervisor. “It ensures that North Elba, Lake Placid, and organizations within the area understand and support an overall, long-term plan for the region. The destination management plan helps each entity make its plans in a very deliberate manner based on the agreed upon vision.”

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – When the coronavirus pandemic overtook the nation last year, many events were either canceled, delayed or displaced. Lake Placid’s I Love BBQ and Music Festival was one of those. The yearly fund-raiser for the Shipman Youth Center, organized by USA Luge, was removed from its traditional location on the Olympic Speed Skating Oval to the North Elba Show Grounds on the edge of town. The date changed from July 4 to Labor Day, and instead of featuring the best barbecue fare in the East, it went with a drive-in motion picture theme to keep families safe.
There is no longer any trailhead parking for Cobble Hill trails, so Lake Placid–area hikers are encouraged to base Cobble hikes from your home or hotel, or to begin your walk from a designated parking space on Mirror Lake Drive or a municipal lot.
Summer 2021 major events will be hosted in Lake Placid / North Elba with restrictions that will keep the safety as a top priority. These events will include IRONMAN and the Summit Lacrosse tournament.
“The North Elba Town Board approved the 2021 IRONMAN Lake Placid triathlon and Summit Lacrosse events following in-depth written and oral presentations from Summit Lacrosse and IRONMAN representatives, which included assurances of a reduction of athletes by 20% and that eligible athletes, coaches, officials, vendors, staff, volunteers and spectators in designated event areas will be required to provide proof of vaccination,” said Jay Rand, Town of North Elba Supervisor. “We thank the organizers for exceptional efforts to conduct these events with the highest degree of safety, and we wish safe and successful events to both IRONMAN and Lacrosse organizations.”

The Adirondack 46ers have increased their support of critical stewardship programs in the High Peaks Wilderness after another busy year in the Adirondacks. Last week they announced a $41,000 commitment to the ADK’s (The Adirondack Mountain Club’s) professional trail crew. This pledge was the second from the 46ers, announced shortly after a pledge of $75,000 to be distributed over three years from 46ers, effectively doubling down on their efforts to support the ADK Mountain Club’s stewardship program. The Stewardship Program is managed in partnership with the NYS DEC, and the Adirondack Chapter of the Nature Conservancy.
Over the last 20 years, the 46ers have donated nearly $350,000 to the ADK’s trails program, $298,000 of which in the last 8 years alone, when visitor use has reached its peak.
I live in the Adirondacks and with a stay at home order, even locals need to find ways to be able to celebrate art and community.
Though there are plenty of nationwide organizations sharing their talents, Adirondack artists and art organizations are representing and celebrating ways to be creative in a pandemic.
Here are five options to make sure that Adirondack art is always part of your life.
