International Children’s Games Set for Lake Placid

Dave Gibson: Rail Trail Controversy Shows Master Plan Has Teeth

Headlined at this month’s meeting of the Adirondack Park Agency was a vote by the APA members to amend the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (SLMP) to allow Rail Trails to be added to the definition of a Travel Corridor, and to support a rail trail in the SLMP’s Travel Corridor management guidance.

Prior to the APA decision, which like all Master Plan amendments must be ratified by the Governor, rail trails were not defined or authorized under the SLMP’s Travel Corridor overlay classification. Travel Corridors  applied only to the strip of land constituting the roadbed and right of way of state and interstate highways and the Remsen to Lake Placid railroad right of way, as well those state lands immediately adjacent to these facilities.  Such facilities had to be transportation related- not just recreational. » Continue Reading.

Ski Jumpers Vie for U.S. Cup Fri-Sat

lake placid ski jumping Several of the United States’ top up-and-coming ski jumpers are set to return to the Olympic Jumping Complex in Lake Placid to vie for U.S. Cup titles and for a spot on the U.S. Junior World Championship Team on Friday and Saturday, December 28th and 29th.

Out of the Closet: Adirondack Ugly Sweater Events

Even thoughtful gifts don’t always exactly fit your taste. Give that ugly sweater a chance to redeem itself (and the sweater giver) by wearing it an Adirondack ugly sweater events. Just like that bridesmaid dress we are always told can be repurposed, that festive holiday sweater can now raise funds for children’s art classes, food pantries, or even a pint of beer. Good luck.

On December 8, BluSeed Studios will host an Ugly Sweater 5K Run/Walk to help fund their annual free spring break and after school art classes for area children. Each participant will receive a raffle ticket for artisan items. Registration and the race begins at their Cedar Street location in Saranac Lake, and continues around Moody Pond to end back at BluSeed Studio for hot beverages and muffins. Admission is $20 for adults (which includes a commemorative artisan tile/trivet), $5 for students and leashed dogs, while children in strollers are free. New Director For Lake Placid Land Conservancy

The Lake Placid Land Conservancy (LPLC) has announced the promotion of Kerry Crowningshield to Executive Director. Crowningshield joined LPLC in 2016 as the Outreach Coordinator.
