$300,000 Challenge for the Future of Lake George

lglc logoManning and Virginia Rowan Smith, with the Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC), have announced a public challenge to raise $300,000 by Thanksgiving. This challenge is to encourage those who support the protection of Lake George to join LGLC’s Land and Water Society.

The Land and Water Society is the LGLC’s legacy society and celebrates those who choose to include the LGLC in their estate planning. You can include them through a bequest, or by naming the LGLC as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy or retirement fund, or through many other options that are available.

Terrestrial, Aquatic Invasive Threats Talk in Hague

PhragmitesThe Warren County Soil and Water Conservation District and Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) are set to host a free informational event about terrestrial and aquatic invasive threats to the region on Thursday, August 15, 2019 from 6 to 8:30 pm at the Hague Community Center at 9793 Graphite Mountain Road, Hague.

Invasive species are an ecological threat to lands and waterbodies, and to local industries such as forestry, farming, and tourism. Early detection and rapid response is the most successful and cost-effective approach to managing infestations of invasive species. » Continue Reading.

Bolton Planning A Recreation Hub Strategy

Annual Hike-A-Thon Sees Surge in Early Registrations

2018 hike a thonEarly-bird registrations for the Lake George Land Conservancy’s (LGLC) Hike-A-Thon have set new records for the event organizers say. Now in its 7th year, the online registration form went live March 4; just 24 hours later, 363 people had registered, filling up five of the 17 available sites. One week later, the registration total reached 450.

With an expected attendance of more 600 hikers, paddlers and volunteers, the Lake George Hike-A-Thon continues to be the LGLC’s largest event. Always scheduled for July 5th, the event has rotated through the days of the week; this year the 5th lands on a Friday, which may be one reason for the huge response. » Continue Reading.

317 Acres of Lake George’s French Mtn Protected

view from French Mountain On October 18, the Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) closed on the purchase of 317 acres on French Mountain, which lies within the Towns of Lake George and Queensbury, for $525,000.

The LGLC will sell the property subject to a conservation easement to the Towns of Lake George and Queensbury; these transactions are expected to take place within the following months, according to an announcement sent to the press. » Continue Reading.

Registration Open For Lake George Trail Race

Amys Adventure logoThe Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) is set to host its second Amy’s Adventure Race for the Lake (Amy’s Race) at Amy’s Park in North Bolton on Saturday, September 29. The race course, which is 4.5 miles/7.2 kilometers in length, is entirely off-road, and goes over brooks, up hills and through the scenic marshes of the 500-acre preserve.

All ages are welcome to compete, and friends and family are encouraged to attend to cheer on the competitors. Registrations for the race can be made online for $25 per person or the morning of the race for $30 (registration opens at 7 am). » Continue Reading.

LGLC Hosts Preserve Ribbon-Cutting in Huletts Landing

Cutting the ceremonial ribbon on September 7, marking the official opening of the Leeming Jelliffe PreserveOn Friday, September 7, the Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) marked the opening of the Leeming Jelliffe Preserve in Huletts Landing with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by nearly 40 community members and supporters of the project.

The 33.3-acre upland preserve was purchased by the LGLC in April. Over the summer, LGLC staff and volunteers blazed a short, easy trail to the preserve’s viewpoint overlooking the narrows and Silver Bay on the western shore. There is currently a small road-front area for parking; a larger parking lot may be created, if needed. » Continue Reading.

Eastern Trails Adirondack Guidebook Updated

ADK Eastern TrailsADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) has announced the release of the fifth edition of its popular trail guide, Eastern Trails, which is part of a substantial reconfiguration and revision of the Forest Preserve Series of Adirondack and Catskill guides.

Eastern Trails highlights some of the most popular and widely used trails in the region and provides the most updated information about entirely new trails, particularly on new Lake George Land Conservancy preserves. Eastern Trails was last issued in a new edition in 2012.

LGLC Northwest Bay, Indian Brook Initiatives Move Forward

Indian Brook Northwest Bay BrookThe Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) has been awarded a $20,000 matching grant from the Cloudsplitter Foundation to be used to leverage new donations for land protection efforts within its Indian Brook/Northwest Bay Brook Conservation Initiative.

The Cloudsplitter grant award is expected to be put towards the acquisition costs of the 159-acre Wing Pond property, purchased by the LGLC in December of 2016. This property, which is within the scope of the Conservation Initiative, includes 15 acres of sensitive wetlands, 750 feet of stream corridor, important habitat for birds and wildlife (including critical rattlesnake breeding habitat), and four-season public recreational opportunities. » Continue Reading.

LGLC Protects Land in Huletts Landing

huletts landingThe Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) has protected 37 acres in the hamlet of Huletts Landing, Washington County, by purchasing a 33.3-acre upland piece and a conservation easement on the adjoining lower 3.7-acres lakefront property on Lake George. This conservation project is expected to provide permanent water quality protection by preventing the development of uplands directly above the lake, viewshed protection, and the addition of a small, family-friendly recreational opportunity.

A press release from the LGLC said the organization intends to make “modest improvements to the uplands property to allow for minimal passive recreational use.” A small parking area is expected to be identified so as to not interfere with traffic on Bluff Head Road, and a short trail will lead to one or two picnic tables installed at the lookout area. » Continue Reading.

Bolton Recreation Hub In The Works

lglc logoThe Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the 2018 Conservation Partnership Program to enable the LGLC and community partners to develop strategies and plans to establish a new outdoor recreation hub in the Town of Bolton.

The plan is a collaborative effort between the Town of Bolton, the Bolton Landing Chamber of Commerce, and the Lake George Land Conservancy. The LGLC has contracted with The Chazen Companies to develop the plan. » Continue Reading.

LGLC Rejects State’s Bid for Anthony’s Nose

anthonys nose The Lake George Land Conservancy has rejected the Department of Environmental Conservation’s offer to purchase Anthony’s Nose for $325,000.

At a meeting of the Board of Directors, held in February, it was agreed that the Conservancy would maintain the Lake George icon as a preserve unless or until the state agency produces a better offer. » Continue Reading.

LGLC Conserves Land on East Brook, Lake George

McPhillips East BrookThe Lake George Land Conservancy (LGLC) has protected 12 acres in the Town of Lake George along the main branch of East Brook, one of the top ten tributaries of Lake George. The property contains over 500 feet of stream corridor and riparian area as well as several acres of wetlands that help to naturally protect water quality.

Located on the west side of Bloody Pond Road, the heavily wooded property abuts Lake George Elementary School land. Some of the land was zoned as High Density Residential and the topography would have allowed up to five homes along East Brook. A statement from LGLC stressed that the organization was not anti-development, but that the protection of this sensitive land for the benefit of water quality made it a high conservation priority. » Continue Reading.
