Long Lake: Two short plays, historical showcase slated for July 30

 

All are invited to drop by the Long Lake Town Hall on Saturday, July 30, a day which will serve as a celebration of the robust history of Long Lake. Guests are encouraged to view a historical showcase and chat with a member of the Long Lake Historical Society from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. before enjoying two short plays that evening beginning at 7 p.m. The two performances, A Walk on the Wild Side with Mary Ann Keller & Mystery of the Buttercup, are written and directed by Gail Huntley and based on the original settlers of Long Lake. These events are offered free of charge.

Thomas Cole’s Visit To Long Lake Focus of Friday Lecture

thomas coleThe Long Lake Historical Society and the Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney Long Lake Public Library will present a lecture on Thomas Cole, a founder of the Hudson River School, by Matt DeLaMater on Friday, August 19th, at 7 pm at the Town Hall on Route 30 in Long Lake.

September, 2016 will be the 180th anniversary of Thomas Cole’s 1846 trip to the central Adirondacks and Long Lake. Many of Cole’s works were inspired by the Adirondacks and White Mountains , but it has largely remained a mystery whether there were any paintings remaining from Cole’s visit to the Central Adirondacks. » Continue Reading.

Accident or Murder? A Soviet Mystery in Long Lake

Leon Trotsky and Ephraim Sklyansky Red Square review of Moscow troops October 14 1918On Saturday evening, August 22, 2015, at 7:30 pm, at the Long Lake Town Hall, Abbie Verner, Long Lake Town Archivist and President of the Long Lake Historical Society will present a program with slides and music about two men from the Soviet Union who drowned in Long Lake in 1925.

The two men, Isaiah Khurgin, and his colleague Ephraim Skliansky, were prominent Soviet citizens and active in the politics of Soviet Russia. The program outlines their backgrounds, their family information and the possible reason for their visit. » Continue Reading.

John Todd’s ‘Long Lake’ Recalls The 1840s

Long Lake Church in the WildernessThe Long Lake Historical Society has voted to acquire a first edition of John Todd’s book, Long Lake.

First printed in 1845, this small volume was written after Todd’s fourth trip to Long Lake. He first arrived in September, 1841 and found eight or ten families “scattered along towards the head of the lake. . . .They lived in their little log houses, and their little boats were their horses, and the lake their only path.” » Continue Reading.
