Seagle Music Colony’s Artistic Director Now Full Time

darren woodsSeagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake has announced that Artistic Director Darren K. Woods, who has been in a leadership role with the company since 1996, has assumed a full time position.

Woods will continue to be Artistic Director, a position charged with the artistic direction of the company, but his duties will expand to include leadership of the Colony’s fundraising efforts. He joins Tony Kostecki, General Director and Jim Koehnle, Managing/Technical Director as the third full-time employee of the organization. » Continue Reading.

Oldies Show in Long Lake Saturday

the oldies showThe Town of Long Lake will host The Oldies Show on Saturday, March 4th at 7:30 pm at the Long Lake Town Hall, 1204 Main Street.

The Oldies Show is a nine piece show band that plays the greatest hits of the 50s, 60s and 70s. The Oldies Show is made up of music industry veterans, who have shared the stage with a number of the artists they recreate. The Oldies Show has opened for rock and roll legends Lou Christy, Kenny Vance, The Drifters, Sonny Terry and performed as part of The Golden Oldies Spectacular at Proctors Theater. » Continue Reading.

Ski Songs Sing-Along And Beer-Share Saturday in Placid

High Peaks Cyclery will host a Ski Song Sing-along from 7 to 9 pm Saturday, February 18 at their next-door Guide House at 2733 Main Street in Lake Placid. Live music will be provided by Barry Oreck.

This free sing-along and beer-share will provide the chance to listen to popular ski songs and share favorite beers with the group.

Potsdam Museum Concert Series Starts Feb 25

what a raquette logoWhat a Raquette Music and Dance, the organization behind the Ives Park Concert Series and Caroling in Potsdam events have annouced their Cabin Fever Concert Series, starting on Saturday, February 25th at 4 pm in the Potsdam Public Museum, located in the Civic Center, 2 Park St, Potsdam.

The new winter concert series begins with a sitar and tabla Indian music concert with Tomek Regulski and SUNY Potsdam graduate Rob Morrison. The series also includes an evening of jazz with Bret Zvacek, trombone, and Paul Meyers, guitar, on March 4th at 7 pm; Don’t Tell Darlings, bluegrass and old-time country, on March 11th at 4 pm; and Miss Angie’s Music, children’s songs and shadow puppet theater, on March 25th at 4 pm. » Continue Reading.

Lake Flower Landing’s Bakery Concert Series Begins Sunday

The Lake Flower Bakery Concert Series will be held on the last Sunday of the month, January through June at Lake Flower Landing in Saranac Lake, with the first concert this Sunday, January 29th, at 4 pm with special guest Brian Donat.

The Bakery Concert Series, hosted by cellist Esther Rogers Baker, and multi-instrumentalist/composer Gene Baker, will focus primarily on music composed within the last century.

Each month will feature Gene and Esther plus guests including Adirondack cellist Brian Donat, Crane professor of electronic music Jerrod Sommerfeldt, Saranac Lake violinist Elaine Dewar, Lake Placid pianist Joey Izzo, Connecticut violinist Annie Trepanier, and guest composer Hillary Tann, among others. » Continue Reading.

Hal Smith, Alias Otis Campbell, Massena’s Shining Star (conclusion)

In 1964, plans were made to celebrate the success of Massena’s nationally famous friend with a special event: Hal Smith Day. Virtually every business and every family in town became involved in the planning, with such crowds expected that tickets and reservations for many events were in hot demand.

Included in the festivities were a group breakfast, lunch, and dinner; a royal welcome that featured a crown made of (what else?) aluminum from the local plant; a visit to the hospital, where he entertained patients; an autograph session at a vacant store transformed by area merchants into a replica of the Mayberry jail; all-day limousine service; band music at several venues; the theater playing movies that Hal appeared in, and autographs for each attendee; a reunion with old schoolmates; induction as a member of the St. Regis Indians; and at the Highland Hotel that night, Hal appeared in the floor show. » Continue Reading.

Hal Smith, Alias Otis Campbell, Massena’s Shining Star (Part 3)

In early January 1938, Hal Smith, described as an “impersonator, vocalist, and musician,” left WIBX in Utica to sing, do impersonations, and perform production work for stations WGR, WKBW, and WEBR in Buffalo. Without missing a beat, he was soon serving as master of ceremonies at high-profile events, and leading a band known as Pop Martin and His Boys while hosting a radio show by the same name. He was also regularly featured on WEBR with well-known Buffalo singer Joan Hutton, on a pair of shows titled “Music is My Hobby” and “Linger Awhile.”

Despite doing well in Buffalo, Hal returned by mid-year to WIBX in Utica. One reason for the move may have been his relationship with the station secretary there, Vivian Angstadt. In early August 1938 they applied for a marriage license, and were wed in Utica on the thirteenth. After a stay at Lake Placid while touring the Adirondacks, they returned to work at WIBX. » Continue Reading.

First Friday Jam at The TAUNY Center This Friday

November 2016 Jam at The TAUNY Center. This Friday, January 6th, from 7-8:30 pm TAUNY invites musicians and friends of all ages to their first First Friday Jam of 2017 hosted by fiddler Gretchen Koehler and singer/guitarist Barb Heller, host of NCPR’s String Fever. TAUNY’s traditional music jams are open to people interested in gathering with North Country neighbors to play old time fiddle tunes and songs from American folk traditions.

Participants are invited to bring an instrument, singing voice, or just yourself and come to The TAUNY Center for this fun monthly jam. Fiddles, guitars, percussion, and/or other traditional instruments as well as all levels of musicians, singers, and step dancers are welcome. To help all players feel comfortable, tunes will be played at a variety of speeds throughout the evening. Players will be invited to pick tunes from the set list–round-robin style–and begin the tune at their speed. Delmoni-McCarty-Thomas String Trio Sunday in Saranac

delmoni-mccarty-thomas-string-trio-2In its 21-year history, Saranac’s Hill and Hollow Music has brought over 200 professional chamber music ensembles to the Adirondacks. Their community outreach has included presentations in schools, churches, senior residences and community centers. I am always so grateful for such organizations that float into our communities with seemingly little effort and bring international musicians to our door.

Long Lake’s OctoBEARfest Set For Saturday

OctoBEARfest will be held at Hoss’ Country Corner in Long Lake on Saturday, October 1st, from 10 am to 4 pm.

Vendors will be selling hand-crafted wares, jewelry, original art, rustica, ice cream, wine and more.  There will be a beer tasting garden featuring local brews from High Peaks Brewery and local food vendors, including the Fat River Foods Truck. Rum Runners Weekend Brings Back The Roaring 20s

rum runners weekendFor the fourth year, Chestertown is bringing back the Roaring 20s. Rum Runners Weekend remembers Prohibition when bootleggers were an important part of local life.

The event kicks off Friday night at 5 pm when Federal Revenue Agents chase a band of bootleggers through local restaurants, starting at The Hub in Brant Lake, and then traveling to the Black Bear in Pottersville, OP Fredericks in Loon Lake, and the Odd Duck and The Bullhouse in Chestertown. At 9 pm, the bootleggers then move to a basement casino featuring blackjack and roulette at The Bullhouse ($25 admission),  while nearby the Panther Mountain Inn is transformed into a Jazz Club. » Continue Reading.

Hobo Fest In Saranac Lake Set For Sunday

hobofestHoboFest, in its eighth year, returns to Riverside Park with an all-new lineup and the US premiere of a century-old work by composer Béla Bartók, who once lived in Saranac Lake.

The all-day event, which will run from noon to 9:30 pm on Sunday, September 4th, is free and open to the public.

Acts include Bucket Ruckus, a marching drum corps; the Dust Bunnies, a popular local blues and folk band; and Piotr Moore, an 11-year-old blues guitar whiz from Essex. Long Lake RondeauFest Line Up Set

grit n graceThe Town of Long Lake Parks and Recreation Department has announced the music line-up for the 5th annual RondeauFest Summer Music Fest in Long Lake, August 20th at the Mt. Sabattis Pavilion, 6 Pavilion Way, from 5 pm to 10 pm.

RondeauFest claims its name from Noah John Rondeau, a noted Adirondack hermit, who dwelled at Cold River Flow in the woods north of Long Lake off and on for over eighteen years from 1929 until 1950. Cycle Adirondacks Community Concert Series Announced

boys greeting ridersWildlife Conservation Society has announced its Cycle Adirondacks 2016 Community Concert Series lineup. The August 20-27 road cycling tour will feature seven consecutive evenings of free entertainment in six different Adirondack communities.
