Tips for hunters, outdoor recreationists on safely sharing the woods this fall and winter

On October 31, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) encouraged outdoor enthusiasts to respectfully share the woods and follow safety precautions this fall and winter. Hikers, nature photographers, leaf peepers, and mountain bikers are encouraged to follow safety measures while hunters and trappers are afield. Regular big game hunting season in the Northern Zone began Oct. 21 and closes Dec. 3. Bowhunting season for deer and bear is ongoing in the Southern Zone and ends at the beginning of the regular firearms season on Nov. 18.

DEC announces photography contest featuring NY moose

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) has recently announced a brand new photo contest for everyone to participate in. The theme—Moose. Specifically, NY Moose. So, if you have any photos of moose that you’d like to submit for the contest, continue reading.

How to enter: You can start submitting your photos of NYS moose now through November 10. The submission process for this contest is relatively simple. Follow this link: https://arcg.is/1KLyiX1 and fill out the form, along with uploading your photo to the form. We will be selecting our top 5 favorite photos, with 1 winner and 4 runners-up.
What do I win?: Our first place winner will have their photo included in an upcoming issue of the Conservationist, along with a free year subscription to the Conservationist, and copy of our New York State Wildlife Guide. Our four runners-up will also receive a free year subscription to the Conservationist, along with a copy of the wildlife guide.

Old Forge Library to host Sue Kiesel’s Healing Power of Photographing Outdoors presentation on Aug. 11

On August 11 at 5 p.m., the Local Histories and Stories Series will feature Sue Kiesel and her presentation on The Healing Power of Photographing Outdoors in the Adirondacks at the Old Forge Library.

Sue is a lifelong lover of the Adirondacks, having been here her entire life as a seasonal resident. She began her current passion for photography 15 years ago and is a true addict!  She enjoys, more than anything, sharing her captures. It is her greatest desire to sway others to appreciate the healing quality that nature offers all of us. If others catch the bug, perhaps they too will learn how fragile mother nature is and promote protecting it for the many generations to come.

Hiking with Grandma Beth: Old Forge resident shares coverage of Loon Census, Moose River Plains

As another extension of our initial post about an Old Forge grandmother, Beth Pashley, avid hiker and talented photographer, The Adirondack Almanack will be featuring snippets of Pashley’s hiking adventures on a year-round basis including her visually-striking and artistic nature photographs. Pashley was inspired to embrace the great outdoors with her grandchildren starting at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, dubbing the family bonding time as “The Grandma Chronicles.”

 

Our last Hiking with Grandma Beth post was published in April, so we thought it was high time to reintroduce her photography to readers, this time by covering her recent excursion to Moose River Plains, as well as to highlight her involvement in the 2022 NY Loon Census.

DEC, State Parks Announce 2022 Outdoor Photo Contest

The online contest runs for four months–through mid-October–with the winning images to be featured in statewide digital and print campaigns.
