The 62nd Annual Whitewater Derby has been set for Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5 in the Town of Johnsburg Hamlets of North River, North Creek and Riparius, along the Hudson River.
The Derby began as a celebration of the Upper Hudson River and it’s history especially the log drives which ended in 1950. The Derby began in 1958 and the Hudson River Whitewater Derby is one of the oldest canoe and kayak races in the United States.
Adirondack Foundation and one of its component funds, the Community Fund for the Gore Mountain Region, have invited nonprofit professionals and board members to attend a one-day workshop, “Building Your Best Board,” to be held at the Tannery Pond Community Center in North Creek on May 11, from 10 am to 3 pm. » Continue Reading.

The Central Adirondack Trail Scenic Byway — a corridor that winds along Route 28 through the Hudson River watershed — will soon feature new signs to engage travellers with natural, cultural and recreational attributes along the route.
The Adirondack North Country Association (ANCA) is leading a project to update and enhance interpretive signage along the Scenic Byway between North Creek and Blue Mountain Lake.
250 acres of the south face of Moxham Mountain have been protected by private sale to the Adirondack Land Trust. There is no recreational access presently. The Land Trust and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are working to transfer the land to the Adirondack Forest Preserve, at which time it will become public.
Moxham Mountain is located between Minerva and North Creek and is part of the Vanderwhacker Wild Forest. It’s lofty cliffs have been eyed by climbers, although no public access to the face of Moxham was possible.

The Town of Johnsburg is connecting its history through storytelling and activities for the third year. The annual Johnsburg History Weekend blends together a grave yard tour, live music, lectures, and children’s activities to make history come alive.
“There is so much history in the North Creek area,” says North Creek Railway Preservation Society President Ellen Schaeffer. ”We approached the town three years ago to make the third weekend in September be The Town of Johnsburg History weekend. So much of our history was being forgotten.”
Schaeffer explains how 25 years ago a group of concerned citizens saw the deterioration of the North Creek train depot. The platform and depot where Teddy Roosevelt learned about President McKinley’s death and his own presidential succession on September 14, 1901 was becoming just another forgotten piece of history. » Continue Reading.
The Tannery Pond Center (TPC) in North Creek is set to present “Local Logging Live! Along the Hudson,” celebrating the logging industry in local communities, both past and present, with activities taking place at both the Tannery Pond Community Center and Riverfront Park in North Creek on August 24th and 25th.
This event will showcase the cultural aspects of the industry and the major role played by the Hudson River. Planned are a variety of activities including musical concerts, historical displays and Gallery exhibit, multi-media lecture, mini woodsmen field day demonstrations, workshops on musical instruments of logging camps, buff mittens, blacksmithing and more. Cycle Adirondacks, in partnership with Speculator, Inlet and North Creek, have announced six consecutive nights of free community entertainment scheduled for August 18-23 during the Ultimate Cycling Vacation, the bicycle touring company’s annual flagship event.

The last 24 oil tanker railcars that were stored all winter on the banks of the Opalescent River were hauled 30 miles south to the North Creek Depot on Tuesday, May 8th.
