A new report provides communities with tools and information for approaching housing challenges in the Adirondack region. Produced by Adirondack Foundation and the Northern Forest Center, “A Place to Start: Adirondack Housing Resources,” is a comprehensive document that includes data, strategies and tools employed by municipalities, economic development agencies, private contractors, appointed task forces, and regional nonprofits. Northern Forest Center Offers Grants for Community Recreation, Proposals Due March 31
The Northern Forest Center is offering grants of up to $2,500 to volunteer-led organizations working to increase local participation in outdoor recreation in Northern Forest Communities. Proposals are due by March 31, 2023.
“We’re increasingly aware of the positive physical, social, and economic benefits of outdoor recreation, and that sometimes a small investment in equipment, staffing, or infrastructure can have a big impact in a community,” said Joe Fox, outdoor recreation manager for the Center. “We’re grateful to LL Bean for providing funding for this grant program.”
Northern Forest Center to host Ensuring Climate Resilience webinar Jan. 17
The Northern Forest Center has announced the next webinar in their Building the New Forest Future series, Ensuring Climate Resilience, which will take place on the afternoon of Tuesday, January 17 from noon to 1:30 p.m. Expert panelists will examine what communities can do today to ready themselves for environmental changes. Registration is free, but is required in order to participate in the webinar.
About the webinar:
Every community faces different pressures when it comes to our uncertain climate future. From flooding and drought to an influx of climate migrants, we will hear about ways communities can plan and prepare to face these changes. We will hear from communities that have already done this preparation and organizations that are leading the way. Speakers to be announced.
Adirondack Community Recreation Alliance Awards 12 Grants to Improve Recreation Amenities
The Adirondack Community Recreation Alliance (ACRA) has awarded 12 grants to help communities create new biking and skiing trails, improve ice skating rinks, enhance terrain parks, and more.
The grant program is part of the Alliance’s work to enhance and develop recreation assets, increase region-wide stewardship, and advance policies to secure long-lasting community and economic benefits for Adirondack towns and villages.
The Northern Forest Center facilitates and participates in the Alliance and raised funds for this round of grants. The Alliance awarded close to $40,000 to help communities from Caroga to Vermontville improve recreational assets for residents.
Grants include funding to strengthen ice skating facilities and resources in Newcomb, Inlet, Ticonderoga and Elizabethtown, support pump tracks in Vermontville and Saranac Lake, create new or expanded mountain biking in Caroga, Chestertown and North Creek, enhance hiking opportunities in Long Lake, expand the terrain park at Mount Pisgah in Saranac Lake, and strengthen a volunteer network dedicated to backcountry avalanche safety education.
Common Ground Alliance Invites Public to Attend Virtual Winter Meeting
Registration for the Thursday, March 25 event is free and open to all
The Common Ground Alliance (CGA) and the Northern Forest Center invites community members to join their winter meeting on Thursday, March 25 at 12:30 p.m. The free virtual event will update the community on progress since the 2020 CGA Annual Forum and present the Strategy for Attracting New Residents to the Adirondacks.
Advance registration is required for the one-hour event, which will be held on Zoom Webinar.

Northern Forest Center forms strategy for attracting new residents
Like other parts of the Northern Forest, many Adirondack communities struggle to maintain strong schools, a robust workforce, and vital civic institutions. The challenges these communities face are economic and demographic, but the solution is simple: to attract and retain more young people to live in these communities.

Wood Pellet Boiler Project Expanded To Region
Financial and technical assistance that has helped homeowners and businesses in New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont switch to high-efficiency wood pellet heating is now available to Adirondack homeowners and businesses through the Adirondack Model Neighborhood Wood Heat Initiative. » Continue Reading.
Proposed: New York Wood Products Development Council
We’ve received the following press release from the John F. Sheehan, Director of Communications at The Adirondack Council:
NYS Darrel Aubertine, D-Watertown, and Assemblywoman Roann Destito, D-Rome, introduced legislation creating the New York Wood Products Development Council to help steer attention and federal dollars into programs and investments that will spur the development of new products and markets.
The legislation was introduced [yesterday] at a 12:15 p.m. press conference hosted by the Northern Forest Center and the Empire State Forest Products Association. Also on hand for the press conference were Assemblyman David Koon, Brian Houseal, Executive Director of the Adirondack Council; John Bartow, Executive Director of the Tug Hill Commission, Jeff Williams of the New York Farm Bureau and others. » Continue Reading.
