The Central Adirondack Association’s Hallowed Forge Pumpkin Party is back for its third year. Activities and celebrations throughout the community are spaced over two weekends, October 22 –24 and October 29-31 (and a few in between). There will be something festive and fall-like for everyone with offerings for families, for children and adults spaced throughout the end of October. Classics like pumpkin sports return for family fun.
“A Select Rustic Show,” a new exhibit at View, the Center for Arts and Culture in Old Forge, will have an online virtual opening reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 26. The online reception is being planned due to the uncertain nature of New York State’s Phase 4 reopening schedule. Everyone can participate in the reception by visiting ViewArts.org.
The online opening will include the following: a Rustic design video introduction by acclaimed Rustic artist Barney Bellinger, a presentation entitled “The Roots of Adirondack Rustic,” by Director Emerita of the Adirondack Museum, Caroline Welsh, and a digital magazine about the artists and their exhibiting work.

View’s 14th Annual Chili Bowl Luncheon has been set for Saturday, February 15th from noon to 3 pm, featuring over a dozen chilis and soups made by local restaurants, with a variety of desserts made by View’s volunteers.
Attendees will be able to choose from a variety of handcrafted, ceramic bowls created by local and regional potters in View’s Ceramics Studio. The three-day 90-Miler Adirondack Canoe Classic starts in Old Forge and ends in Blue Mountain Lake on day one; starts in Long Lake and ends near Tupper Lake day two; and starts at the NYSDEC Fish Creek Campground Day 3 and finishes on Lake Flower in Saranac Lake.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has recently completed of upgrades to Nicks Lake Campground on Bisby Road in Old Forge, Herkimer County.

We’ve hit the ceiling on short-term rentals
I find myself frustrated by the ballooning trend in the Adirondacks, including the Town of Webb, whereby local family homes in once stable neighborhoods are being bought up by out of towners looking to make a killing on short term rentals.
As a resident since 1986, I’ve watched the housing market move steadily upward in terms of new builds and values. In the early 2000’s, especially after 9-11, there was a strong uptick in neighborhood homes being bought by down-staters presumably to have a place to escape the cities and feel safe. That created “dark” spots in previously year-round neighborhoods. But locals at least knew who their neighbors were even if their presence was sporadic. A direct result of the demand was a significant increase in property values that led to the current housing crisis in which locals are unable to afford homes of their own and fewer quality long-term rental units are available.
