Three Olympic venues open this weekend as the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) ramps up a schedule of family fun and activities.
The Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway, in Wilmington, NY, opens on Friday, May 18. The Highway, stretching eight miles from Wilmington to the summit, allows visitors to drive to the top of New York State’s fifth-highest peak. Once at the summit, guests can enjoy views of the Adirondack High Peaks and visit a castle made of native stone. The Highway is open weekends only through May 28, then daily, from June 1 through October 8. » Continue Reading.
The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) has announced they are now accepting public comment for a proposed amendment to the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center Unit Management Plan.
Highlights of proposed changes include new intermediate downhill ski trails, widening of some existing trails, an extension and replacement of the existing Bear Lift and a replacement and realignment of the existing Freeway Lift. Proposed changes include new downhill ski trails, widening of some existing trails, a new triple or quad lift from Northwood Lodge to Lower Sunway, an expansion of the NYSEF building, snowmaking improvements and a request for State Land reclassification. The meeting will address proposed amendments to the Adirondack Park State Land Master Plan (including changes to the Travel Corridor definition), Invasive Species management, and proposed actions involving Gore and Whiteface Mountains. The Public Awareness Committee will hear a presentation on the Adirondack Diversity Initiative, and the Regulatory Programs Committee will be briefed on revisions to the Variance and Large-Scale Subdivision Applications.

The International University Sports Federation has selected Lake Placid as the site for the 2023 Winter World University Games. Delegates from the Adirondack North Country Global Sports Committee and FISU signed a memorandum of understanding at the FISU headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland last week after nearly a year and a half of negotiations.
This will be the second time Lake Placid has hosted the Games (the first time was in 1972) and the third time New York State has hosted (Buffalo hosted in 1993). The Games have never been hosted by another state in the U.S. » Continue Reading.
Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington opened its third peak for skiing and riding. The Wilmington trail, off Lookout Mountain is now open. The Wilmington trail, the northeast’s longest intermediate run, is 2.5-miles long, overlooking Wilmington’s Wild Forest.

The State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) is accepting comments on a major and much needed multi-million dollar upgrade to its facilities in the Adirondack and Catskill Parks. In particular, ORDA is proposing multiple improvements at Whiteface and Gore Mountain Ski Centers through amendments to each facility’s Unit Management Plan (UMP). Proposed improvements include the addition or replacement of ski lifts, widening of trails, creation of new trails, and re-classification of Forest Preserve lands.
While these improvements appear to be needed to modernize the ORDA recreational facilities, they must to be legal and demonstrate responsible environmental stewardship. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) and today announced the completion of Gore Mountain Ski Resort’s 5.3 megawatt solar array in Washington County, The installation is believed to be the largest solar installation dedicated to a ski resort in the nation.
Gore Mountain’s snowmaking system, lift operations, and other electrical equipment use about 13-million kilowatt hours of power and cost approximately $1 million in utility costs each year according to ORDA. The 14,589 solar panel system is ground-mounted and remote net metered, meaning it is built off-site and the energy produced is exported onto the electricity grid, which Gore will receive credits for on its utility bill. » Continue Reading.
Record high temperatures settled in for the first half of the autumn season, but they have dropped and snowmaking crews made use of recent New York State investments in snowmaking to open state facilities ahead of schedule. Gore and Whiteface Mountains began the 2017-2018 season last Saturday, a week earlier than originally planned. The Mt. Van Hoevenberg Cross Country Ski Center opens Friday, November 24.
Trail volunteers have been working to clear ski the region’s trails and a few early cross-country tracks were made on the smoother terrain in the Tri-lakes this week. There was about 5 inches of snow at the Paul Smith’s College VIC on Tuesday, and there has been some early skiing at the golf courses around the Tri-Lakes, but conditions will be weather dependent over the next few days. A chance of snow showers are in the forecast for the weekend.
