Election Day may have passed, but there is still an opportunity to exercise your right to vote. This time it isn’t about the Constitutional Convention or corrupt politicians’ pensions, but Pendragon Theatre’s 2018 summer season.

This is the third year that Pendragon has opened its summer season with a play chosen by audience members through a series of free staged readings. This year’s event kicks off November 11 with a free reading of the work of three UK playwrights. The lineup includes scenes from The Effect, Girl in the Machine, and Constellations. » Continue Reading.

1984 headerThe Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts will present 1984 by George Orwell, adapted for the stage by Michael Gene Sullivan. Pendragon Theatre will be presenting this stage adaptation at the Arts Center on Saturday, October 14 at 7:30 pm.

The adaptation, by Michael Gene Sullivan, based on the iconic novel by George Orwell, tells the story of Winston Smith, a cog in the giant machine state of Oceania. Physically and mentally under the omnipresent eye of Big Brother, Winston has been caught struggling for scraps of love and freedom in a world awash with distrust and violence. With the brutal “help” of four Party Members, Winston is forced to confess his Thoughtcrimes before an unseen inquisitor, and the audience – which acts as a silent witness to his torture. Pendragon Theatre’s Young Playwright Deadline Approaches

My family always feels so fortunate to be able to attend live theatre across the Adirondack Park. We’ve seen incredible shows at the professional stages of Saranac Lake’s Pendragon Theatre, Adirondack Lakes Theatre Festival, Westport’s Depot Theatre and ADK Shakes, to name a few. We’ve attended regional productions by Our Town Theatre Group, Community Theatre Players and Essex Theatre Company.

Each group provides a variety of wonderful experiences for children and community members to be part of the action, but Pendragon Theatre has a unique opportunity that fosters a different creative outlet. » Continue Reading.

Boquet River Theatre Festival Kicks Off Essex Day

238ff6_0c083b8b742c5fcd5657efefcf4768adChildren’s theatre can conjure up images of school recitals and awkward dances. For those of us visiting and living in the Adirondacks, there are many professional theatrical organizations lending their own brand of polish to provide a wonderful theatre experience.

Most recently Camp Pendragon Theatre wrapped up its summer camp program with two public performances of the musical Rags while the Depot Theatre’s Young Actor Apprentice Program‘s production of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit takes its final bow on August 10th at the Elizabethtown Community Center.  This weekend the Boquet River Theatre Festival is kicking off its 23rd season  with a musical montage of its most recent performances. » Continue Reading.

Pendragon Theatre’s Young Playwrights’ Festival April 2

NCPR Young Playwrights' Festival 2014 (1) image 1Earlier this winter Saranac Lake’s Pendragon Theatre once again rolled out the red carpet and offered free playwright workshops for students. These professionally run workshops helped students streamline their original submissions to the annual Young Playwright Festival. Through the Young Playwrights’ Festival, Pendragon Theatre is not only making the stage come alive for young adults, but their words as well.

“This year we offered writing workshops leading up to the Young Playwright Festival,” says Managing Director Tara Palen. “We thought it made more sense to help the students construct their submissions before the deadline.” » Continue Reading.

Christmas Plays Around The Adirondacks

12295332_970312599681712_8661386587782439186_nThere is more to the Adirondacks than being on a mountain, though that is certainly one way my family plans on spending the holidays. We also look forward to relaxing together during a classic Christmas performance. It sounds corny, but with our kids being pulled in one direction for school sports and my husband and I going in another direction for work, we find it best to meet somewhere in the middle. Thankfully there are plenty of wonderful theatre performances around the Adirondacks that will help us get into the holiday spirit. » Continue Reading.

Second Weekend of Saranac Lake’s Daffest

IMG_6423Spring is finally here and Saranac Lake has thousands of daffodils starting to bloom as proof. The first weekend of the springtime Daffest tradition flew by with its “Try Mine” Pastry contest and Daffest Derby race, and now the final weekend approaches and all sorts of spring activities are on the docket.

My family always enjoys this ritual of spring. Mud season is a tough time. We don’t want to damage the fragile hiking trails, but we still want to explore outside. An easy fix is walking through Saranac Lake Village to see all the daffodils just starting to bloom. » Continue Reading.

Pendragon Theatre’s Young Playwrights Festival

IMG_3821Last year was the first time Saranac Lake’s Pendragon Theatre hosted a playwriting festival for young adults. My daughter and a friend were one of the many students that took advantage of the free day of theatre workshops.

The workshops focused on playwriting through fun, engaging exercises for children in grades K-6. Now in its second year, the format has slightly altered to allow excerpts and staged readings from local adult authors. » Continue Reading.

Everything Groovy At Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

20150207_224326The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is rolling into its second full week of events.  At Pendragon Theatre’s performance of “Saranac Lake Sings the 60s” on Saturday, some 35 musicians took to the stage for a sold-out performance that showcased the development of Rock N’ Roll, highlighted the huge acts of the 60s while demonstrating the impact music had on that generation and generations to come.

Thanks to demand for an encore performance, Pendragon  has opted for a second show on February 11th.  Tickets can be purchased at the theatre’s website or by calling (518) 891-1854. » Continue Reading.

Unique Adirondack Theatre Opportunities

ADKCenterArts_ShakespeareThe mountains, nature and waterways are just part of what makes our time in the Adirondacks so unique. The other part is the artists, musicians and performers that make the Adirondacks their home while sharing their creativity with the rest of us. Though the numerous Adirondack professional and regional theaters are offering a variety of entertainment, it’s the unique opportunities that these theaters have on the docket that I’d like to highlight.

Pendragon Theatre and the Lake Placid Sinfonietta are presenting “A Soldier’s Tale” on August 3 at 2 pm on the Pendragon stage and a 7 pm showing at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts. In additional to their amazing main stage offerings and concerts, this special event brings two professional entities together for a rare production. » Continue Reading.

Sandra Hildreth: Our History In Art And Music

redTo understand how America was made, one need only go back and look at what people created, their responses to the events and environments they lived in. There are currently two unique opportunities available that will take you back to other times in very different ways. Both are based on things that occurred around 60 years ago – one building on centuries of songs and the other forging a path into the world of contemporary art, ironically, going on at almost the same time.

A one time opportunity to learn about our past through the arts is a performance tonight, (July 14) of “RED”, a Pendragon Theatre production that is making a one day tour to VIEW, in Old Forge. “RED”, a Tony award winning play by John Logan, is a two-person performance that brings you into the 1950’s world of Abstract Expressionism in New York City. » Continue Reading.

Pendragon Theatre CampPendragon Theatre has always been one of my family’s favorite places to see a theatre performance in the Adirondack Park. In addition to an intimate theatre experience, there are always opportunities for children to gain professional theatre skills.

Pendragon hosts kids’ camps, live productions and internships throughout the year. Their latest event is bringing not just the stage alive for young adults, but hopefully their words as well. » Continue Reading.
