A Walking Tour of the Plattsburgh Barracks Saturday

old base walking tourOn Saturday, August 20th, the Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) will be partnering with City of Plattsburgh Historian John Krueger to offer a Walking Tour of the historic Plattsburgh Barracks.

Starting the tour with the 1609 discovery of Lake Champlain, the tour will explore Lake Champlain’s military history that led to the Battle of Plattsburgh, paving the way for what is known today as the Plattsburgh Barracks/Post or, as to most locals, the Old Base.

Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Market Kids Day Saturday

PlattsburghFamersKidsDayFive years ago Plattsburgh Farmers and Crafters Market co-manager Bonnie Gonyo started the annual Kids Day as a way to introduce the local farmer market to visitors and area residents. The event has grown bigger and better each year, adding activities and giveaways for children of all ages.

“This is our fifth anniversary so we have some special things planned,” says Gonyo. “I start planning this event in February. It takes time because we bring in a variety of organizations from the Girls Scouts to Mountain Lake PBS. This year we have a little 5th anniversary tote bag for the kids. It was illustrated by Speedy Arnold who also plays the guitar and writes his own music. I’m so excited to see those dancing veggies on the tote bag.” » Continue Reading.

Gordie Little: The Passing of a North Country Legend

P1 Gooley&Little20151125Folks in Essex and Franklin Counties, but in Clinton County most of all, are mourning the death last Wednesday of beloved historian, author, and media legend Gordie Little, undoubtedly one of the North Country’s best friends ever. Media legend? How else does one define the impact of 36 years on the radio, followed by nearly two decades of newspaper columns for Plattsburgh’s Press-Republican and recent columns in Denton Publications, while also hosting weekly programs on cable-access television? And through it all, he promoted the entire region at every opportunity.

Gordie wasn’t just on the radio: for thousands every day, he was radio. Shortly after joining WIRY in Plattsburgh back in the early 1960s, he was voted the top DJ among 12 competitors from area stations, earning for him a Golden Mike award. The fans had spoken, and he never looked back, making radio his life. The morning birthday show on WIRY became a regional classic. Many of us heard our birthdays announced back then, and heard Gordie do the same for our own children decades later. Families woke up to his voice daily, learning all the local news as we readied for school or work. (And he was always there, working more than 30 years before throat surgery forced him to take his first sick days.) Listeners will never forget his humorous, self-deprecating catch phrase: “Gordie Little – Who’s He?” » Continue Reading.

9 Local Performances Of The Nutcracker Ballet

photo-16Throughout the Adirondacks and beyond, one holiday tradition that our family and many others look forward to each year is “The Nutcracker” ballet. This family-friendly ballet signals the holiday season with its period costumes, magic and adventure and this year there are several opportunities to see “The Nutcracker”  in the Adirondack region.

According to North Country Ballet Ensemble board president Scott Tuller, their production this year features significant scenic and choreographic changes. They will awe patrons, Tuller said, whether they are new to “The Nutcracker” or have seen the ballet before. » Continue Reading.

Adirondack Wine And Cheese Events This Weekend

1442165626This weekend two of my favorite things are headlining part of the Adirondack Fall Festival tour, wine and cheese. The Adirondack Coast Wine Trail is showcasing local beer, wine, and cider while Adirondack Harvest is once again offering a unique Adirondack cheese tour.

We all know that wine and cheese go together like, well, wine and cheese. I was thinking it’s “mother’s little helper,” but didn’t want to come off like I have a problem with… cheese. » Continue Reading.

Cold War: When Locals Watched The Sky For Russians

01SkywatchRecruitStickerIn the 1950s northern New Yorkers had war on their minds. Thousands of average citizens put television, Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Corvettes aside over concerns about World War III. Fresh on everyone’s minds was World War II, but the U.S. was right back into a mess in 1950 in Korea, where a three-year fight became one of the building blocks of the Cold War. On it’s ground floor were the everyday North Country folks who joined Operation Skywatch. » Continue Reading.

How Well Do You Know The Battle of Plattsburgh?

BattleofpburgWikiIn the spirit of the September 10–13 Battle of Plattsburgh commemoration (check out what you missed, and make plans to attend next year), here’s a little Q & A fun from the battle itself, the War of 1812, and Lake Champlain history.

The answers immediately follow each question, so if you enjoy testing yourself and/or others, don’t peek. And if you’re not familiar with the Battle of Plattsburgh, it’s a fantastic story of Americans triumphing against great odds in both a land and water battle. As much as anything else, the victory at Plattsburgh helped end the war. » Continue Reading.

Battle of Plattsburgh Weekend, Sept 10-13

IMG_1318In the past the Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration had grown into a two-week celebration. Now, for the first year, the City of Plattsburgh has condensed the commemoration into a tightly packed four-day celebration this weekend, September 10-13.

According to Sandra Geddes, Promotions and Special Events Coordinator for the City of Plattsburgh, the goal for shortening the event was to bring the focus back to the historical aspect of the battle, keep all the elements that brought a variety of people to the area and present it all in a more concise format. » Continue Reading.

Arnold Winkler Is From Plattsburgh!

RonDapoArnoldWinklerA recent encounter with an old “friend” resulted in some surprising information, courtesy of my wife, Jill. A few TV buffs might recognize the name Arnold Winkler. Others might not know the name but will recall the character. Arnold was the spoiled friend of Opie Taylor (Ron Howard) on “The Andy Griffith Show,” and in a memorable episode, he provided Opie with some advice on how allowances work and how to negotiate. Some of the dialogue is great, and two scenes are excellent—Opie’s testing of Arnold’s methods, and the finale in the sheriff’s office.

Jill loves many of the old shows that have been revived on different channels. I’m much old … scratch that … let’s just say I’m enough older than her to have seen the shows when they originally aired. It’s common ground for the two of us to watch old shows together. At least in my opinion, they stand up quite well against any competition. While some provide escape, “The Andy Griffith Show,” believe it or not, depicts small-town life much as it was in the 1950s and early 1960s. » Continue Reading.
